Ailing JU health centre irks staff, students | | | Raj Sandeep Early Times Report
Jammu, June 19: The Jammu University health centre, alleged to be a victim of neglectful attitude of the administration, has multiplied the sufferings of students and staff with the authorities concerned taking no interest to improve the deteriorating health services in the campus. JU sources said only one Medical Officer, who is simply MBBS and an influential one, has been on leave for the last 15 days without any alternative arrangement of Medical Officer in her place. There is a dental surgeon who could not handle the patients needing medical treatment, thus leaving them on the mercy of god. "The patients are forced to visit private clinics ond hospitals outside campus," the sources added. Sources said though X-ray machine had been installed, there was no technician to operate it on regular basis as JU had outsourced the service to technicians from a government hospital and there was no guarantee of their sticking to the schedule. "This is causing great inconvenience to students and low paid employees who cannot afford to go to private clinics for X-ray. Similar is the position of ultrasound machine for which there is no regular radiologist available at the Health Centre," sources alleged, adding that the services of doctor were also outsourced and these would now not be available due to summer break for a month, depriving staff and students of diagnostic facility. Sources alleged that JU had not done much to strengthen health services and adhocism continued to prevail at the health center. Sources alleged that on Saturday the health center remained open for half of the day with no doctor on duty available for patients and it was run by one pharmacist and an orderly. Not only this, it was kept closed on Sunday and all gazetted holidays, depriving students of total medical facility. It was functioning like a normal govt office instead of a full-fledged health service provider. While it should remain open round the clock, it was strange to note that the Medical Officer was never available to attend emergency after 5 pm even as he had been provided residential accommodation, sources alleged. Expressing surprise on the laxity of controlling authority to monitor the functioning of Health Centre, sources alleged that the physiotherapist appointed in the centre was on long leave and the section was left unattended. While the government was upgrading health services everywhere in the state, the varsity health centre was more or less akin to health centres falling in far flung areas where people frantically languish for medical treatment. During the day time, those residing at the campus could to go to private clinics or hospital, but at night, it was difficult for them to go out. "It is thus imperative that JU should give a relook to the functioning of health centre and strengthen it by adequate medical and paramedical staff, making it functional round the clock," sources said. |
