Demanding compensation, Ranjit Dam Hostees receive stick, block NH

Kathua, Aug1: Hundreds of people/Dam Hostees who were displaced during construction of Ranjit Sagar dam, sought compensation and employment for the land acquired by Ranjit sagar Dam authority under a memorandum of understanding signed three decades ago.
Dam Hostees today expressed resentment against state and Punjab government for not giving compensation /employment and blocked national highway.
The police administration that must pacify the public instead used sticks than congenial attitude under the supervision of Kuljeet Singh Dy SP DAR.
Protest got aggressive thereafter and people started shouting slogans against district administration. Two hours long traffic jam on both side created havoc among commuters.
Tejinder Singh Goldy, President Basholi Dam Hostee union led the protest and informed that one lakh and 70 thousands of kanal fertile land comprised in 22 villages were acquired by Punjab government for the construction of Ranjit Sagar dam.
He said according to MoU, Dam authority had to compensate and give employment to farmers but no compensation has been given till day. Singh informed that state government fixed Rs 25000 per kanal rate for people whose land acquired in Doda/ Kistwar district but merely Rs 16500 per kanal for fertile land acquired in Basholi.
Discriminatory attitude of state government and its lethargic attempt to proceed the matter with Punjab government compelled people to stage protest against state government.
Des Raj, Vice President of the union informed that Collector, SDM Basohli and Mohinder Paul tehsildhar Basholi also failed to process the demands of the public with concerned authority.
He said number of deputations of Dam Hostee called on DDC Kathua but no action has been taken in this regard.
The protesters , later on condemned lathicharge that hurt their feeling and helplessness. They demanded market rate for their acquired land, employment and other facilities decided in MoU. Vishnu Andotra, a stranded one, pointed out working of BJP-PDP that allegedly failed at all ground to pacify public by redressing their demands.
He said Ch Lal Singh sitting MLA from Basholi's political career began with the demands of Dam Hostee but he also forgot his people in last 3 decades despite at his peak on political career. He said Dy CM Dr Nirmal Singh also hails from Kathua but never worked for his people.
Addl Deputy Commissioner ADC Kathua Bharat Bhushan rushed on the spot and tried to pacify the people. Despite of having knowledge about lathicharge, he refused occurring of such activity.
ADC informed that DDC Kathua sent the list of 58 people for employment in Ranjit sagar dam to Punjab government but the government leveled few objection that would be rectified within days. He said administration has received 1 crore and 32 lakhs that would be distributed as installment within days to dam hostees for compensation of their acquired land.
