Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 1: As the separatists and militants are calling the shots in volatile Kashmir Valley, which has been witnessing unrest for the past 24-days, the people of Jammu are watching the developments keenly as the Kashmir unrest has hit Jammu more than Kashmir.
Most supplies to Kashmir are sent from Jammu and crores of rupees are transacted between the two regions on monthly basis. "Businessmen in Kashmir owe lakhs of rupees to the traders and industrialists in Jammu. Unrest has led to maximum transactions come to a grinding halt thus disturbing the economy," said a trader.
"There are scores of businessmen who had dispatched supplies of commodities, machinery items, other goods in advance as a matter of routine business modus operandi, but over a month now, our payments stand withheld accruing huge losses," he added.
"The anger is getting intense for the fact no one in the government nor anyone in the ruling BJP has uttered a word for the losses Jammu is compelled to bear at the hands of protesting Kashmir," the businessman added.
An analyst said, "It's high time for Jammu people to think about alternatives as Kashmir is an uncertain place where anything can happen anytime. Investing in Kashmir doesn't make any sense. The 2008, 2010 and now 2016 have proved that Kashmir and Jammu are different. The present unrest should serve as an eye opener for the people of Jammu who still believe that both the regions can grow together."
With situation across Kashmir Valley unrelenting and protestors refusing to be at peace Jammu is paying through nose for none of its fault.
"The Kashmir unrest, sponsored by Pakistan and fuelled by separatists, has hit Jammu on every front. The transporters community is the worst hit. Both big transporters as well as small time operators whose livelihood depends heavily on ferrying tourists, pilgrim tourists and common masses from Jammu too during the summer months to Kashmir Valley have faced huge losses in the past over two weeks. Though this goes same for their counterparts in Kashmir, but those from Jammu are suffering for none of their faults in the political turmoil being dragged by the vested interests in Kashmir. Many transporters were attacked at different places by the stone pelters and protestors during the past few days after they ventured to carry on with their business," said an analyst.
"There are hundreds of people from various districts of Jammu whose important, deadline oriented works remain suspended pending approval by an inoperative rather non functional government, sources said adding that though government is managing functionality in the civil secretariat with skeletal staff presence, that is only ornamental as all crucial works and business of the government continues to remain suspended. Not to speak of scores of aspirants of government jobs from Jammu region whose interviews were to be conducted in the month of July by PSC and SSB for the posts they have cleared in the written examinations. Distressed and disappointed, are waiting haplessly for the situation to turn normal that will pave way for issuance of appointment orders in their favour by the Civil Secretariat authorities," said an official
"No one can deny that Jammu and Kashmir are dependent on each other but emerging situation and external forces calling the shots in Kashmir have made things difficult. Jammu people need to understand the gravity of the situation and give a thought about confining their relationship with Kashmir," said an analyst.
"Interestingly, the timing of triggering violence in Kashmir of this magnitude annually ranges from June to August months and it's this period when Kashmir's economic activity mostly driven by huge tourist inflow is witnessed at its peak. However, the end result of this unrest cannot be predicted safe as people are playing into the hands of Pakistan and their agents," said a renowned columnist.
