40 persons including 25 SF men injured across Kashmir | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Aug 1: Around 40 persons including 25 police and security forces personnel got injured in clashes across the Kashmir valley today. Meanwhile, curfew remained in force in downtown Srinagar and some districts of South Kashmir. Reports said that one youth was critically injured and some others sustained minor injuries after police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired pellets and some bullets on a protest demonstration at Levdoora in Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. A group of agitated people mostly comprising of youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel at Levdoora this morning. The security forces lobbed scores of smoke shells on the protesters in order to bring the situation under control. However, as the protesters did not relent the security forces fired pellets and some bullets towards the protesters. As a result of the same at least five youth sustained injuries. Out of the injured a youth identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Shah sustained serious injuries due to a bullet and pellet in his neck. Mushtaq was rushed to Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura where he was operated upon. His condition is stated to be stable. The other injured are being treated at a local hospital. Three CRPF men were also injured in these clashes. At least four persons including a woman were injured during clashes in North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Groups of protesters clashed with police and CRPF personnel at different places in the district. The police and CRPF personnel lobbed smoke shells and resorted to pellet firing on the protesters. This led to injuries to at least four persons including a woman. The injured were shifted to Kupwara hospital for treatment. Reports said that a youth was hit by a teargas shell in Tangmarg area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. The youth identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Zargar son of Ghulam Nabi Zargar of Chichloora was injured after he was hit by a teargas shell near Tangmarg. He was moved to Magam hospital for treatment. Protests were also reported from Bandipora in North Kashmir and Qaimoh in South Kashmir. Some protesters and security forces personnel sustained injuries during the stone pelting incidents and the retaliatory action. The situation was by and large normal in the other areas including Srinagar, summer capital of the state. Authorities imposed curfew in areas falling under jurisdiction of police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Maharaj Gunj, Rainawari, Safa Kadal, Kralkhud, Zadibal and Soura in Srinagar. Curfew was also imposed in Anantnag and Pulwama districts of South Kashmir. In rest of the areas life was paralyzed due to the strike call given by the separatists. A police spokesman said that the situation throughout Kashmir valley remained under control although 15 incidents of stone pelting were reported across the valley. The spokesman said that incidents were reported from Ganderbal, Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora. "During these law and order situations three persons, 25 police and security force personnel including a CRPF Coy Commander were injured. The CRPF Coy Commander suffered serious injury in his face. As a precautionary measure curfew/restrictions were put in place in police stations of North Zone Srinagar and Anantnag town," said the police spokesman. Kashmir valley has been on edge since the evening of July 8 when Hizbul Mujahideen Commander, Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed along with his two associates in a brief encounter with police and security forces at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district. So far 53 persons including three policemen have been killed in clashes at different places as people protested against the killing of Burhan. |
