Union HRD Minister to inaugurate IIT Jammu on August 6 | CM, Akhter likely to skip function | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 1: The coalition partner Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is likely to face major embarrassment on August 6 as Union Minister Parkash Javedekar is visiting Jammu to inaugurate Indian Institute of Technology but both Chief Minister and Education Minister are likely to give a miss to the ceremony, signaling strained relationships. Sources in civil secretariat informed Early Times that Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedekar is scheduled to visit Jammu on August 6 to inaugurate proposed IIT Jammu at 11 AM in Jammu. "For the inauguration ceremony, names of dignitaries of state government to be present in the programme were sought by the organizers of the function. The Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education department had reportedly send communication to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Higher Education Minister Naeem Akhter for their consent to be part of the state delegation", sources said. They further informed that though written communication were forwarded by Higher Education department but neither Chief Minister and nor Education Minister have so far given their consent and reportedly verbally communicated to the department, their unwillingness to be part of the state government's delegation to be present during inauguration ceremony in Jammu. Sources further informed that the Higher Education department has to finalize the list of dignitaries, who would deliver speeches during the function. "The Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, Member Parliaments, concerned Member of Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, Commissioner Secretary, Director Colleges and names of some other dignitaries have been finalized by the department", sources said. A higher official of Higher Education department and a nodal officer of New Delhi have been monitoring the arrangements for the ceremony, scheduled to be presided over by Union HRD Minister and would be held in a building of private B.Ed college in Jammu. Political pundits opined that by skipping the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Mehbooba and Education Minister Naeem Akhter, have been trying to show their difference with coalition partner BJP, stance of which was very tough over Kashmir turmoil and it would not be more than a face saving exercise in valley. Pertinently, on May 1, the Jammu and Kashmir state government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi for setting up of IIT in Jammu. The MoU was signed by Hemant Kumar Sharma, the then Secretary, higher education department J&K and Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, in presence of Jammu and Kashmir deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh. About 625 acres of land has been approved at Jagti in Nagrota for establishment of IIT Jammu and regular classes will commence from the current session in the temporary campus. |
