Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 9: As situation continues to be volatile in Kashmir, scores of BJP leaders and workers have deserted their houses and taken refuge in guarded hotels in Srinagar.
Sources told Early Times that most of the BJP people who have left their residences belong to south Kashmir's Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts. The south Valley is the epicenter of the present uprising in Kashmir.
Sources said the BJP workers who have abandoned their houses in order to escape the mob attacks include Dr Ali Mohammad Mir, state publicity secretary; Altaf Thakur, state media secretary; Ghulam Nabi Dar, district president Kulgam; Abdul Rashid Wani, constituency president Beerwah; Arif Rabia, protocol in charge; and Manzoor Ahmad Kulgami, general secretary district Kulgam. Meanwhile sources said that many workers and leaders of other political parties like Congress, NC and PDP and former counter-insurgents (Ikhwanis) as well have also deserted their houses. "Most of them have either fled to Jammu or to high security zones in Srinagar," sources said. They said that majority of these people have been housed in government hostels and hotels in Rajbagh, Indira Nagar, Sanat Nagar and Jawahar Nagar areas of Srinagar.
Sources said that many BJP workers have been relocated to Indira Nagar near BB Cantt, as it is considered the most secure place in Kashmir due to its proximity to the 15 Corps headquarter of Indian Army. "Last month, after clashes with the paramilitary soldiers, a group of protesters moved towards my house. I thought they would torch my house. I and my family was frightened. Fortunately, we managed to flee from the place," Altaf Thakur told Early Times.
It is in place to mention that the house of a PDP Rajya Sabha member, Nazir Laway, was attacked in Chawalgam area of Kulgam.
