Reaching out to Jammu's water succor of talabs, rivers and bowlies | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 9: Amidst the challenges and the little resources available , the state of Jammu and Kashmir needs to exploit its potential in drawing a comprehensive plans to save the water bodies in Jammu, particularly that of the Kandi belt of the areas. The mushrooming of urbanization into the far stretches of the rural setting of Kandi areas have signaled towards a specific attention required from the administration, NGOs and the individuals to rise and form self-groups to create public awareness as well as participation in conservation and preservation of the shrinking water bodies and ponds in the region. In the urban confines in the pre-dates when Jammu used to be a small and growing town, the historical ponds here have been known for their impact on the day today life of people and several localities like Bantalab, Rani Talab, Talab Khatinka, Tilloo Talab were christened against these water bodies . These ponds which used to constitute important water buffer, particularly during summer had their usage in winters also as despite being used for potable purposes, the water sufficed to all household needs as well as the commercial needs of the city also Groundwater is the water located beneath the earth's surface in soil pore spaces, it also occurs in the fractures of rock formations. A unit of rock or an unconsolidated deposit is called an aquifer when it can yield a usable quantity of water. The depth at which soil pore spaces or fractures and voids in rock become completely saturated with water is called the water table. Groundwater is recharged from, and eventually flows to, the surface naturally; natural discharge often occurs at springs and seeps, and can form oases or wetlands. Only two decades earlier, people used to depend on pond water for day-today-activities, but now one of the important ponds that existed in our locality has turned to be a dumping site of the household waste, said Yogita Singh of Bhatindi, a prolific explorer of unsung water bodies in Jammu who on Sept 8 reported an Early Times article under caption -withering legacies, extinct, shrinking water bodies adding woes to Jammu's water needs. The freelancer has taken up a strategic and comprehensive individual self-group effort to report the dying heritage of elixir of life in various parts of Jammu district. Moreover, besides the natural water table contents in the region, Jammu boasts of two major rivers which add to the beauty and providing water succor to Jammuites. The river Chenab is formed by the merging of two Himalayan rivers, namely Chandra river and Bhaga, river - which gives a popular name of Chanderbagha to river Chenab. This river enters Jammu near Paddar at Kishtwar where the river Wadwan joins it near Akhnoor before entering the plains of Jammu and then into Pakistan. Rambir and Partap canal takes off from it near Akhnoor as a result of which thousands of Kanals of agricultural land in Jammu is irrigated. Salal, Dulhasti, Sawlakot and Baghilar Hydel power projects are located on this river. The source of Tawi is the Kailash Kund Spring at Soej hills in Bhaderwah. After flowing through the Chennani and Udhampur, Tawi passes through Jammu and joins the Chenab in Ranbir Singh Pora and then enters Pakistan. Chennani hydro electric power project constructed on River Tawi has a capacity to generate 23 MW of power. Most of the people in Jammu attribute the pathetic condition of rivers and ponds attributed to influx of people from other parts of the region and state who constructed houses in these localities. Within Jammu region many water bodies are associated with the village deities but after new localities came into being, new inhabitants seldom have any emotional attachment with them and used them as garbage dumb. How many bowlies of the Jammu region still find relevance with religious and other water needs of the people will be taken up in next chapter. |
