KVK Reasi organizes 'World Soil Day'

Reasi, Dec 7: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) organized 'World Soil Day' at KVK, Reasi campus in which large number of farmers from nearby villages enthuastically participated.
The programme was organized under the able guidance of Dr RK Arora, Associate Director Extension of SKUAST-J. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi. He gave a detail account on soil health management and aware the farmers that every year 5th of December is celebrated as the World Soil Day to highlight the importance of soil on the earth. He spoke that the soil is under tremendous pressure due to increase in population at an alarming rate and higher demand for food. He said that around 33 per cent of global soils are degraded.
He informed that soil health has been deteriorated by the unhealthy agricultural practices, deforestation and pollution. He elaborated the technical and scientific guidelines for soil health management to the farmers. He stressed on organic farming. He further added that the healthy soil is an essential resource for the global farming, food security, biodiversity and energy. He informed the farmers that the Soil Health Card Scheme is a national movement across the country and under this scheme the soil samples are taken by the experts from the farmer's field and tested in a soil health laboratory. He then added that on the basis of the results of the soils of respective farmer field, he can add the plants nutrients in the soil accordingly.
