SRINAGAR, Dec 7: Lt Gen PJS Pannu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 14 Corps has felicitated Project Himank for their outstanding contribution in extending road connectivity in the nook and corner of Ladakh region.
Gen Pannu said that at present there is hardly any area in the Ladakh region which has so far not been connected with the hinterland adding that the credit must be given to Project Himank. He while referring to the achievements of Project Himank said the Project has created and is maintaining roads and airfields in the most hostile terrain of the world. The GOC 14 Corps made these remarks during a function held at Leh in commemoration with the 32nd raising day of Project Himank. Large number of dignitaries from both army and civil administration participated in various programmes held at Himank Complex.
"Construction of roads at an altitude of 10,000 feet to 19,300 feet and their maintenance is itself a big challenge for Project Himank. The project has rendered a yeoman's service in ensuring access to strategic military areas as well as connecting people of Ladakh. This has cemented a special bond between Project Himank, army and the people of Ladakh," said Gen Pannu.
The GOC 14 Corps presented a trophy to Project Himank as a token of appreciation for their contribution in the road sector.
Reminding the services of jawans of Project Himank, Chief Engineer, Brigadier D M Purvimath laid the wreath at Himank Memorial and paid homage to hundreds of personnel who sacrifices their lives in the construction and maintenance of roads in the hostile environment. He said the Project was raised on December 4, 1985 at Leh, exclusively for development of road communication in the Ladakh region, which till 1960 was connected with the rest of India by only mule tracks.
The Chief Engineer said that Project Himank has attained a respected name by virtue of connecting hostile terrains at an altitude of 19300 feet which has brought about a massive economical development of the region. He stressed upon the jawans to maintain high standards and said that in the coming days more mile-stones shall be achieved with same zest and zeal with the construction of new road networks in rather impossible areas which could shrink the distances and bring prosperity of the region.
