Srinagar, Dec 23: Irked by frequent power cuts , people in volatile Basantbagh and Manderbagh areatoday locked down the PDD's main Power Receiving Station at Manderbagh as a mark of protest against authorities for taking commoners for a ride.
Large number of people including men women and children took to the main roads and staged massive demonstrations to protest unscheduled long-drawn-out power cuts in these areas.
They alleged that the areas including Maisuma, Maderbagh, Basantbagh and Barbarshah are reeling under complete darkness despite people paying monthly electricity fee on time.
Protesters amid anti government and anti PDD sloganeering initially sat on a dharna and later marched towards PDD Receiving Station to lock it down.
They threatened the PDD employees who give electricity bills of dire consequences in case they were found roaming anywhere in the area.
"We are poor people, ours is a non-metered area but we pay bills on time, if we honestly pay monthly bills despite facing prolonged power cuts why don't government provide at least eight hours electricity in the area," Raja Bano an elderly women from Basantbagh said.
She said that their area has been reeling under complete darkness and despite repeated reminders to the concerned authorities to look into the issue nothing substantial was done in this regard.
The agitated protesters claimed that the area witness only four hours power supply while there is no power for rest of the time. They threatened to set the Receiving Station on fire if authorities failed to provide adequate power supply to them.
"We don't want uninterrupted power supply as ours is a non-metered area, but the authorities should at least follow their own announced scheduled, we have been witnessing the same since our childhood, everything changed but there is no change in worst power scenario,'' said Feroz another resident.
