Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 23: Complete lack of accountability and involvement of huge money has made Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association an epicenter for promotion of nepotism, favouritism, corruption and shady deals rather than a body for the promotion of cricket in the state.
After ET reported large scale irregularities in the selection of under 16 team earlier this month, similar irregularities have been reported in the selection of under 19 team for Cooch Bihar Trophy as well, wherein merit was allegedly ignored to accommodate candidates sponsored by the 'voters' of the JKCA.
The faulty selections and team combinations to adjust the blue eyed have resulted in shameful results for the state. In the six matches played by the state in the season; it lost five with humiliating margins and sixth was drawn due to bad light. According to reports, the state team played six matches between November 14 to December 19 this year. It lost by 9 wickets to Mumbai, by an innings and 39 runs to Himachal Pradesh, by an innings and 69 runs to lowly Assam, by an innings and 101 runs to Andhra Pradesh and by six wickets to Rajasthan. Shamefully, J&K lost all these 4-day matches within three days.
Insiders attribute the pathetic performance of the state team to faulty selections and team combinations. A Jammu player was accommodated in the team despite his poor performance in practice matches allegedly because his father was a close friend of an important office bearer of the association. "He did not score even ten runs in the practice matches, yet he was in the team" said an insider. "Son of a former selector parachuted in the team in the last match just to earn the certificate which he did not deserve" he added. "Not only the players, even few officials who accompanied the team had nothing to do with cricket" he added further.
One of the players pleading anonymity told ET that JKCA had allowed Cricket to become commercial business in the state, with sections and berths in the final eleven being sold for a price tag. "Batsman are made to bowl and bowlers are made batsmen so as to create berths in playing eleven for the blue eyed and those who can bear the cost" a senior player divulged alleging complete lack of accountability. "In most of the matches of the Cooch Bihar Trophy, those selected as spinners were left out on spinning tracks and batsmen were made to bowl so that the blue eyed could be accommodated in the playing eleven" he added.
Meanwhile, a parent while talking to ET on phone divulged that he was contemplating legal recourse against the JKCA's arbitrary and corrupt selection process. "JKCA team represents the state of J&K and there has to be accountability in its operations. A bunch of people with vested interests cannot be allowed to mar the careers of budding cricketers of the state" he added.
