Altaf Bukhari trains guns at his own govt | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 23: At a time when the People's Democratic Party led government claims to have geared up development activities across the state, PDP MLA and former minister Syed Altaf Bukhari has criticized his own government. Bukhari has regretted that the ongoing dredging of Jhelum in Kashmir is going on at snail's pace and asked the administration to "wake up before it's too late." Expressing serious concern over slow pace of mechanical dredging of River Jhelum, the former minister has called for corrective measures to be taken to get the project executed expeditiously in a time bound manner. "Leave apart dredging the government has even failed to remove bottlenecks from Jhelum something which has left Srinagar more vulnerable to floods", Bukhari said. He stressed on removal of bottlenecks which have so far hampered the overall progress in achievement of the desired results. "The dredging project was chalked out to help increase the carrying capacity of river Jhelum and its flood spill channels. But the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities has so far yielded minimal desired results in that direction," Bukhari said. His statement exposes the apparent lack of coordination between the coalition allies. The concerned Ministry for Irrigation and Flood Control lies with the Bharatiya Janta Party while the MOS happens to be PDP lawmaker Muhammad Farooq Andrabi. Sources said the BJP has taken a serious note of the brazen criticism by the PDP MLA. "As a matter of fact there's a hidden understanding between the PDP and BJP by virtue of which issues pertaining to Kashmir are largely managed by PDP lawmakers, be it minister or MOS. So he (Bukhari) should have picked up the matter with the concerned MOS from his party," said a BJP leader pleading anonymity. He said Bukhari's statement even exposes lack of coordination within PDP. "What prevented him asking the MOS from his own party as to what reasons hamper the dredging of Jhelum," the BJP leader said. A senior official in the Irrigation and Flood Control Department said it was nothing but media gimmick of the PDP MLA. "Shouldn't media ask him as to why his party leaders got fresh constructions done on the banks of Jhelum and as to why the flood spill channels and flood basins are being filled on the patronage of these leaders?" he said. He said more flood basins in Srinagar were either being land filled or will be landfilled in the coming days. "Even massive land filling of Narkara wetland is on in his own constituency, why is he silent on that. Or does he not know that havoc floods created?" the official questioned. |
