| Pvt colleges 'encourage copying to earn good grades' | | Students write to PM; fingers pointed at JU officials | | P S Bali

Jammu, Dec 23: In an attempt to earn good grades at university level and to earn easy money, private colleges in Jammu are allegedly encouraging copying in their institutions.
The incident came to light when a group of students appearing for different examinations wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought his intervention to end what they call open mass copying at private colleges.
In their letter, the students write: "We the bonafide students of University of Jammu and candidates of different exam streams want to bring some of these facts for your kind attention and strict action. We are appearing in examinations conducted by University of Jammu for different streams in the examination centre in…college allotted to us by the University of Jammu. We are appearing in our exams with best of our efforts, sincerity, punctuality and within the code of conduct mentioned in the university calendar.
"To our surprise the supervisory staff which is wholly responsible and answerable for the conduct of these exams smoothly, fairly and impartially is totally violating these norms and procedures and is (encouraging) mass copying for the influential and selected students by accepting a fix amount of bribe."
The students also write that the officers concerned in the Controller Wing of JU know fully about this "gorakh dandha" but inspite of repeated requests and complaints they did not bother to take any action against this influential college owner for the reasons best known to them.
"It will be pertinent to mention here that the same college was black listed for university exams few years back when a flying squad in a surprise raid recovered cheating material," the students write.
The students also allege that the main gate of the college is kept closed to stop the flying squad so that they could get the time to hide cheating material and other proofs.
They maintained that the centre superintendent, before the start of examinations, collects money from the students and in exchange not only provides a separate room to the privileged students but also gives them study materials.
The students asserted that when they lodged protest against this malpractice, the superintendent not only misbehaved and abused them but also threatened to register a case of unfair means and misconduct against them. |
