Police foil separatists plan to protest against citizenship rights to WPRs, Malik arrested from Sarie Bala | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 23: Police today arrested Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik when he tried to march towards the city centre and carry out a protest demonstration there. Meanwhile, protests erupted in some areas of Kashmir valley after the Friday prayers. Reports said that Malik along with some of the JKLF activists managed to reach the shrine of Dastigeer Sahib at Sarie Bala and offered Friday prayers there. As soon as prayers were over Malik and his colleagues tried to march towards the Lal Chowk area and stage a protest demonstration in the city centre. As soon as Malik came out of the shrine and started his march towards Lal Chowk the police personnel pounced upon him near Amira Kadal and arrested the JKLF chairman. It was surprising that despite Malik's arrest there were no protests in Maisuma and adjacent areas as the same had happened in the past. Malik and other separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had asked people to carry out protests after the Friday prayers against the state government's decision to grant citizenship rights to West Pakistan Refugees (WPRs). Geelani who continues to be under house arrest was denied to offer theFriday prayers. Geelani has been under house arrest on most of the days during this year and as such he could not offer the Friday prayers. While the separatists and leaders of some mainstream parties are alleging that citizenship rights have been given to WPRs, the state government is maintaining that only identity cards have been issued to the refugees. The issue has of late snowballed into a major controversy with the government and opposition locking horns over it. Mirwaiz after offering the Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid in the Nowhatta area in downtown Srinagar came out in the form of a procession. He while addressing the people present there said that separatist leadership would oppose tooth and nail the state government's decision to grant citizenship rights to WPRs. Following this there were incidents of stone pelting in some of the areas in the vicinity of Jamia Masjid. People mostly youth pelted stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in areas like Nowhatta, Gojwara and Rajouri Kadal. The stone pelting was retaliated by lobbing of smoke shells. The ding dong battle carried on for some time with injuries being inflicted on some of the protesters and also security forces personnel. Protests took place in Tral in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. People carried out a protest rally afterFriday prayers. The protesters protested the issuance of domicile certificates to WPRs. Clashes erupted in Sopore as security forces used force to disperse the civilians who were demanding action against those who injured nine-year-old boy last week while stone pelting clashes were going on in the area. Reports said that the protesters included the family members of the injured minor, Mursaleen, who was wounded badly after a stone hit him in his head. The protesters demanded that police should identify the culprits and book them. Police fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters. |
