CM directs police to restore mobile services | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, June 2: The Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayed has directed the police to restore mobile services and deal with the miscreants sternly. The CM chaired a meeting of the top officials including the DGP and sought immediate restoration of the services. The meeting was called following decision of the landlords to shut down the services till June 10 following attacks on towers that left two persons dead and several wounded. The Chief minister stated that the people cannot be pushed into Stone Age as modern-day functioning in Government which includes Banking, Tourism, Education, and other vital sectors, in particular, old-age pension, e-transfer of insurance claims and compensation to flood-affected victims are totally dependent on internet connectivity. He directed the Police to take all possible steps to thwart any attempt to disrupt cellular networks in Kashmir. Lashing out on the attackers, Chief Minister asked Police to provide security to mobile tower installations and owners and added that miscreants must not be allowed to take law into their own hands. Pertinently following threat perception after one lesser known militant outfit 'Lashkar-i-Islam' attacked the towers, the one organization representing BSNL tower landlords in Kashmir according to sources today decided to close their towers till June 10. One member of association informed Early times on the condition of anonymity that not only BSNL but also all other cellular companies operating in Kashmir have decided to close their franchise counters till June 10 and have set June 10 as a deadline for government to take steps for their safety. After BSNL franchise operating in ten different districts of Kashmir closed their outlets, retailers have also shut their business as a result not a single pre-paid BSNL subscriber is able to recharge his cell phone in Kashmir. Five BSNL franchise holders of Kashmir according to sources have decided to close outlets of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara. The crisis has also affected the students appearing in different competitive exams. Many tourism players also expressed their anguish over the development. According to them, the floods have dealt a severe blow to the tourism industry and now the mobile phone criris is having its toll on tourism. |
