Early Times Report

Jammu, June 2: The toll plaza at Bann on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has become a subject of debate from the very first day as it charges excess toll tax even for small distance.
The journey on the national highway within the state from Jammu to Srinagar and vice-versa is expensive for the private vehicles only as the amount of toll charged at Bann toll plaza is more for private vehicles rather than the commercial vehicles.
According to reports, the people of local areas have to pay toll for their vehicles, which is in excess by the NHAI as compared to the toll charged from the taxi operators.
Earlier, the transporters protested against the NHAI, saying it charged them even before the completion of the project and the toll that was charged was excessive.
According to the data available with Early Times, the toll plaza at Lakhanpur is charging an amount which is far lesser than the toll charged by toll plaza at Ban. The toll plaza Lakhanpur charges Rs. 70 as toll for to and fro journey in 24 hours for one vehicle, but the toll plaza at Ban is charging Rs. 75 for every entry.
Sources told Early Times that buses and vehicles which have to go to Katra and Reasi have to pay an amount of Rs 160 per side even after using only around 30 kms. They said that even the locals residing in Domel area or Nagrota should have to pay Rs 75 per side in their private vehicles even if the same have to cover the distance of mere few kilometers, which is quite unjustifiable.
Project Director, NHAI when contacted said that the NHAI is charging toll as per the guidelines given to them. He said, "We have approached the district administration to provide lists of areas within 20 kms and the vehicles registered within 20 kms to and fro toll plaza. NHAI has plans to issue passes to the commuters falling within 20 kms area," he said.
