Forgets he banned SMS for 4- years, stopped local news on cable channels | Omar shedding crocodile tears over disruption of mobile services | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 2: The man, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah, who banned Short Messaging Service (SMS) for nearly four years is ridiculing his successor the incumbent Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for disruption in mobile services across Kashmir. Omar took to the micro blogging site twitter on Tuesday to taunt Mufti. "Mufti Syed in 2002-2005 said (during his previous term as the chief minister) 'I gave the people of J&K cell phones' and Mufti Syed (20)15-?? 'I oversaw the demise & removal of cell phone services in Kashmir'," Omar tweeted. He even questioned the silence of the Chief Minister over attacks on cell towers. "Has Mufti Syed said anything to reassure the people connected with the Cell Phone industry in Kashmir? A single statement? Probably won''t!!" Omar tweeted. Someone needs to remind Omar that when he was the Chief Minister how many times did people ask him about the restoration of the SMS, he never bothered to give any reply and lifted the ban on SMS just a few months before assembly polls. The incumbent Chief Minister had recently told reporters that attack on mobile towers is a temporary phase and people behind such acts would be taken care off. Mufti has not banned the SMS nor has he asked the telecom companies to switch off the towers. "Attacks on cell phone towers have created uncertainty across Kashmir and it's an unprecedented situation. It's not the creation of government but banning SMS in 2010 was government's creation and the service was not restored even after normalcy returned," said an analyst. The Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed again on Tuesday directed the Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra to ensure that mobile services don't get disrupted and all the steps should be taken to take care of the elements inimical to peace. It's strange that Omar is unaware about the directions of the Chief Minister and is propagating that he (Mufti) has maintained silence over the issue There is no doubt about the fact that it was Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who persuaded the Government of India in 2002 to introduce mobile services in Kashmir despite him facing stiff opposition in New Delhi at that point of time. "He (Mufti) assured Delhi that introduction of mobile services in Jammu and Kashmir is no security risk. Time has proved that he was correct," said an analyst. He said prior to Mufti taking over as the Chief Minister of the state in 2002, his predecessor and NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah didn't allow mobile companies to start operations in JK till he was in power. "It seems Omar's memory is short lived and he has forgotten how his father (Dr Farooq Abdullah) as Chief Minister opposed the mobile phone services in JK. He (Omar) too has forgotten that when he held the highest seat of power how many attempts he made to curtail the free flow of information." Pertinently, soon after Omar took over the reins of the state in 2009 he imposed a ban on the local news which was telecast on the local cable channels in Kashmir. His decision rendered hundreds of youth jobless. "He Omar stopped the cable news as it highlighted the failures of the government. He banned the SMS service to establish his writ and prove that he is the king of Kashmir. As he (Omar) has been dethrone now he is shedding crocodile tears to gain sympathy of the masses," the analyst added. |
