New Delhi, Aug 10: Former Defence Minister, senior leader and President of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh at his North Block office here today and discussed with him wide range of issues related to the State of Jammu & Kashmir. Sharad Pawar expressed his concern about the potential risk of floods that continues to confront the Kashmir valley and suggested that from the experience of the floods in September last year when river Jhelum overflowed breaking the banks, what is required is undertaking of suitable measures, including dredging of the river to prevent such recurrence in future. The world famous Dal Lake which used to take care of water during excessive rains has also suffered from encroachment with illegal constructions, he observed. He also demanded expediting of the process of clearing insurance claims of flood victims. A written note submitted by Sharad Pawar claimed that the ground reality in Kashmir is different from what is projected and stated that the separatists do not command the kind of support as claimed by them. The note also referred to the condition of displaced Kashmiri Pandit families which stayed back in the valley despite militancy and whose number is very small. It also warned against the radical elements seeking to regain strength in the State and cautioned against the possibility of Taliban turning their attention towards Jammu & Kashmir once they began to leave Pakistan. Dr Jitendra Singh appreciated the concern expressed by Sharad Pawar for Jammu & Kashmir and said that the various points raised and suggestions made by the veteran leader would be considered in the right perspective. |
