Ministers go missing, refuse to meet people | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 10: Even though PDP-BJP coalition government just completed five months in power, the civil secretariat in Srinagar wears a deserted look as there is hardly any minister available in his office. The BJP ministers hardly attend their offices in Srinagar and so is the case with the ministers of PDP. Even if the PDP ministers are in the capital town they hardly attend their offices. Majority among the ministers stay out of their offices on one pretext or the other. The visitors who come from far off places for resolution of their problems had to wait hours together outside the offices of ministers but leave disappointed in the evening to their respective places. There are always long queues of people, seeking entry into the secretariat. The strong cabinet of 24 ministers rarely visits the secretariat. Even a couple of ministers who come here sit in their retiring rooms for a couple of hours and retreat to their cozy homes. "Even if a minister comes to his offices, he immediately summons any senior officer and sits with him in the retiring room for hours without caring for those who come from far off places to see them" Mohammad Akbar of Gudder in Kulgam district told ET on Monday. Even the legislators cutting across the party lines complain that if at al any minister occasionally attends office, he would immediately summon a senior officer or officers and spend all the time with them in the side room and refuse to meet the MLAs. The PDP MLAs have reportedly lodged a strong protest before the party president on this behavior of the ministers but to no avail. Moreover uncertainty is also keeping these ministers away from the secretariat. They are not sure whether the coalition lasts for a longer period, thus they prefer to attend their constituencies over attending their offices in the civil secretariat. The BJP ministers, hardly attend their offices in Srinagar. Several BJP ministerial colleagues of Mufti have another fear. When some ministers were contacted to know the reason of their absence from the secretariat they said they are in the field for on-spot inspection of the development works. However, they had no answer to the queries that the state was reeling under worst kind of financial crisis as the central government has not released the annual plan as yet bringing the developmental activities to a grinding halt. However, what is even more astounding that a senior minister of PDP flies to Mumbai more than frequently leaving the official assignments unattended. "Last the minister had consented to be the guest of honour at a government function which was presided over by the Governor N N Vohra in Kashmir University. However, the minister did not turn up. When the officials contacted his office, they were informed that the minister flew to Mumbai one day before the function" said an official adding that the minister did not even bother to inform the organizers or the Governor. A political worker wishing anonymity told Early Times that visiting Delhi could be justified but one fails to understand why the minister often goes missing from Srinagar and could be traced only in Mumbai. However, some of the ministers said since they had nothing to give to people, at this juncture, they would not like to face any embarrassing situation with visitors to the secretariat demanding one or the other concession. |
