For and against Pak

Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 10: NC president and former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has suddenly become very active. He has started touring different parts of the state and his objective is to paint the PDP-BJP coalition government black by exposing what he calls its anti-democratic and anti-people policies and restore the political space his "unpopular" son and former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah lost to the PDP in Kashmir and the BJP in Jammu during the 2014 assembly elections. The strength of the NC is just 18 in the 87-member assembly and it is its lowest ever tally.
During his interactions with the people, Farooq Abdullah has not only been attacking the PDP-BJP coalition government and accusing the PDP of promoting the so-called RSS agenda in Kashmir, but also blowing hot and cold as far as his stand on Pakistan is concerned. One day, he would lambaste New Delhi and urge it to start a meaningful dialogue with Pakistan to forge a lasting peace in the state, virtually suggesting that Pakistan is a stakeholder even in this part of the state, and the very next day he would slam Pakistan, saying it is utterly irresponsible.
It needs to be underlined that Farooq Abdullah on August 8 batted for Pakistan by urging New Delhi to bring Islamabad on board so that a meaningful dialogue process between the two nations was revived. "Peace would remain a distant dream unless Pakistan army is taken on board in peace process," he had said while addressing a public meeting at Surankote (Poonch), and added that he "wondered whether any serious effort is being made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prevail upon Islamabad, as the ground situation on borders continue to be grim". The very next day in the same district, Farooq Abdullah took on Pakistan for not extending an invite to the Speaker of Jammu & Kashmir Assembly for attending Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC), which will be held at Islamabad between September 30 and October 8.
Slamming Pakistan for not inviting Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Speaker for the CPC meet and dubbed the country's stand as "unfortunate," Farooq Abdullah said: "It is extremely unfortunate that Pakistan has not invited the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly speaker for the meet. It is good that the government has decided to boycott the meeting if the state speaker is not invite".
Pakistan had on August 8 said it would not extend an invite to the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly speaker as the state was a disputed territory between India and Pakistan. Speaking at the venue, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's foreign affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz had said Pakistan would never invite a Jammu and Kashmir Speaker as the legislature "does not enjoy legitimate status". "We cannot invite the speaker of the Jammu & Kashmir assembly as the assembly does not enjoy legitimate status because it represents a disputed territory, which needs to be settled in the light of the UN resolutions… Pakistan's position on Jammu & Kashmir would be compromised if the speaker of the 'Kashmir's legislature is invited' to the conference,", Aziz was quoted as saying by state-run Radio Pakistan.
To write all this is not to suggest that Farooq Abdullah didn't do a right thing by slamming Pakistan for its stand on Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Speaker. He did a right thing. To write this is only to suggest that Farooq Abdullah is not consistent. The problem with him is that he does a U-turn in no time. That's the reason the NC, the Kashmir's premier politico-religious party, was rejected by the people in 2002, 2008 and 2014. Farooq Abdullah needs to take a clear-cut stand on India and its Jammu & Kashmir as well as Pakistan. He cannot confuse the people by one thing one day and taking a U-turn on the same subject the very next day.
