SRINAGAR, Aug 10:A strong earthquake jolted buildings across the Valley on Monday afternoon forcing people to come out for safety. Tremors were also felt in Delhi. The epicentre of the magnitude 6.2 quake was 88 kilometers (54.68 miles) from Feyzabad in Afghanistan, at a depth of 209 kilometers (129.87 miles), the US Geological Survey said. 'The fact that the epicentre was too far away from Kashmir in deep Hindukush Mountains in Afghanistan was a blessing in disguise that no damage was caused in Kashmir," said an official of state's disaster management. Pakistan Meteorological Department, according to an online portal, said that strong tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Batkhaila, Abbottabad, Mansehra and Chitral besides capital Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.Pictures posted by netizens on Twitter showed scary Pakistanis running out of their homes and offices. Reports from various parts of the valley said that frightened residents rushed out of their home as the earthquake struck at around 3:30 pm today. So far, there was no report of any loss to life or property. The Hindukush mountain ranges are known to be prone to earthquakes. Incidentally, another high intensity earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on Richter Scale hit the Solomon Islands at around 9.42 am on Monday. |
