EJAC leaders, daily wagers arrested while carrying out protest rally | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 10: Police used force and arrested scores of employees including some leaders of Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) after they tried to march towards the residence of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in order to highlight their demands. As part of their programme hundreds of daily wagers of different departments assembled near the Sher-I-Kashmir Park here in order to press for their regularization that is pending for years now. The daily wagers joined by other employees started their march towards the residence of Chief Minister in order to submit a memorandum to him. The huge posse of police that was posted tried to stop the protesters and asked them to go back. The protesting daily wagers did not stop and went ahead with their protest march. On this the police personnel resorted to mild lathi-charge in order to disperse the protesters. Water cannons were also lobbed on the protesters to keep them at bay. The protesting daily wagers led by EJAC President, Abdul Qayoom Wani tried their level best in reaching the residence of chief minister. However, they could not reach the residence of Mufti and as such their plan was scuttled. The lathi-charge and lobbing of water cannons led to pandemonium on the Maulana Azad Road with both the public and private transport getting affected. Near the office of Directorate of Information the police personnel swooped on the protesters and arrested Qayoom along with other EJAC leaders like Manzoor Ahmad Pampori and Farooq Ahmad Trali. Chairman of the Daily Wagers Forum Sajad Ahmad Parray was also arrested by the police along with scores of other daily wagers and other employees. It would be in place to mention here that thousands of daily wagers working in different government departments are on war-path against the government. The daily wagers under the ambit of Daily Wagers Forum have been demanding for the regularization of daily wagers that according to them is pending over the past couple of decades. In the meantime, the EJAC has strongly condemned the police action on the protesting employees and said that the action was totally unwarranted for. The EJAC has threatened of broad based agitation in case the orders of regularization are not issued in favour of the daily wagers discharging their duties in the various government orders.The EJAC has also condemned the use of force on protesters and arrest of its leaders. The Committee said that daily wagers were protesting in favour of their demands and stopping them in doing so was totally uncalled for. |
