Samba: Embezzlement alleged in MGNREGA funds | | | G S Asgotra
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 13: The employment scheme under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has turned into a breeding ground for corruption, as officials have allegedly embezzled the funds meant for constructions in Samba district. Mohan Singh, the naib sarpanch of Deon village in Purmandal told Early Times that in league with the local Gram Sewaks, some officials of Rural Development Department (RDD) have embezzled nearly Rs 7 lakh allocated by RDD Samba for construction of a check dam, retaining walls of ponds as well as construction of retaining walls of houses. Singh said in financial year 2011-12, the RDD Samba had allocated three construction works in Deon village worth Rs 8 lakh. It included Rs 5 lakh for construction of check dam and Rs 3 lakh for retaining walls of ponds and houses. "But due to lackadaisical approach of the department concerned, only Rs 95,000 has been released." He alleged that a nexus was operating in the RDD, as a result of which the amount of Rs 7 lakh allocated for the works has been "digested by some officials and the department concerned." "Instead of nabbing the corrupt officials the RDD was busy in shielding them," Singh said. When contacted, BDO Purmandal, SK Bali said he had joined the office only two days ago and is presently busy in preparations for the Independence Day function. "I will soon enquire about the matter and take appropriate action," he said. |
