2 months left for expiry of VC 's tenure, search committee yet to be constituted BGSBU to lose its head soon 8/14/2015 12:20:02 AM Akshay Azad ET Report Jammu, Aug 13: The delay on part of Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education department (JKHED) to appoint search committee for selection of Vice Chancellor of Baba Gulam Shah University (BGSBU) speaks volumes of apathy towards the varsity, which had earned notoriety for infamous scholarship scandal, few months back. Sources informed Early Times that as usual the search committee for selection of VC of any university was constituted nearly six months before the expiry of tenure. "But in BGSBU, the tenure of incumbent VC Prof. IA Hamal is expiring in October but search committee is yet to be constituted by government", sources said. They further said that the five-member Search committee comprised two members nominated by Executive Council of University. "Few days back, two members including Prof. Hasnain from IIT Delhi and Prof. Abad from Jamia Milia University have been nominated but the remaining three members are to be nominated by government. In absence of the appointment three members, formal constitution is delayed", sources further said. Sources further said that earlier, the constitution of committee was delayed due to alleged deliberate failure of BGSBU authorities to appoint nominees in the search committee. "Instead of appointing any member from state Universities, the BGSBU authorities have deliberately appointed two members from outside Universities, so that more time will be wasted", sources said. "The incumbent VC has been burning midnight oil to delay the constitution of committee and its recommendations, to evade any action against officials, who are involved in the scholarship scandal", sources alleged. Commissioner Secretary to Government Higher Education department, Sarita Chouhan said that in the five member search committee, one member was to be appointed by University Grants Commission (UGC). "We are in communication with UGC and whenever they nominate the member, search committee will be in place and notification inviting application will be issued", she said. Pertinently, after constitution of selection committee, applications would be invited from the aspiring candidates and after short listing, the committee would interact with shortlisted candidates and forward select names to Chancellor to take final call.
