Sushma helped Modi, ignored ET complaint | ET harassment row | | Let’s hope she takes notice of police officer-turned-BJP activist harassing ET editor Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 13: While external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, who has landed in a major controversy for helping scam-tainted ex-IPL chief Lalit Modi to obtain British travel documents, finds nothing wrong in her conduct, saying she had helped him on 'humanitarian grounds', in J&K, she has surprisingly ignored an important humanitarian issue related to the unlawful torture of Early Times by a senior state police officer-turned-BJP activist, who was known in the state administrative circles as Man Friday of a close confidant of ex-chief minister Omar Abdullah. ET management, led by its editor, had called on Swaraj on December 24 last while she was in Jammu along with Arun Jaitely in connection with the book release function of a state BJP leader. The editor explained to her how the high-profile police officer, who was then posted in Jammu, had surpassed all limits of humanity and indulged in human rights violations while causing them mental torture through unlawful means. A written statement of facts, duly signed by the editor, was also submitted to the BJP leader with the hope that she would live up to her reputation of being a champion of human cause but nothing of the sort happened. While she surprisingly helped Modi on humanitarian grounds and is now at the centre of a major controversy for helping a scam-tainted person, she utterly failed in the just and genuine case of Early Times. She may also take no notice of the ET complaint even after the publication of this 'report of regret' but "we still expect justice from her even if the wrongs were committed by her own party colleague who had plunged into politics for purely personal reasons soon after he retired from police service over an year back". The even more regretful is his elevation in the party. It is like rewarding an accused by ignoring the wrongs committed by him. It is also like encouraging wrong people in the party. This has already triggered a resentment in the J&K BJP circles. Early Times is known for journalism of courage in J&K. The burying of its complaint by Sushma for obviously no reason leads to the denial of the right to be heard. It is also being seen as an "unintentional" move to gag the freedom of press in the state. It is also most likely to encourage more such police officers in J&K to take law in their hands and torture the law-abiding journalists. Would BJP ever wake up and unhesitatingly recommend legal action against its own leaders who had joined the party after committing all sorts of wrongs while they were in service? Even a delayed notice of the ET complaint by Swaraj would be welcome.
