Srinagar, Aug 13: What could be termed as another desperate attempt to appease Islamabad, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, all of a sudden and out of the queue congratulated Pakistan on its Independence day in a bid to remain in its good books.
In a detailed statement issued to press here on Thursday, Mirwaiz became perhaps the first separatist to accord a bizarre greeting to Pakistan. Such a handout is seen by many as another attempt, after attending Pak Eid Milan by Mirwaiz to remain in the good books of Pakistan in a bid to keep his rival, Huriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, away from the citadel.
The new government in Pakistan, since assuming office had been showing proximity towards Geelani, while leaving Mirwaiz in lurch. The recent joining of several persons in Geelani's conglomerate while bidding adieu to that of the Mirwaiz, was also reported to be orchestrated by the Pak authorities.
While the Mirwaiz has been on the best of terms with Pakistan, particularly with Musharraf, Geelani has generally been out in the cold. But it is the relationship of the two Hurriyat leaders with Musharraf that is of particular interest. Because it was Musharraf who turned his back on Geelani in 2005 when the latter opposed his "out-of-the-box" approach to resolving the Kashmir issue.
On the other hand, the moderate Hurriyat group led by the Mirwaiz not only supported Musharraf in his peace endeavours with India, but also worked to mobilise public opinion in favour of his four-point proposal.
However, while Islamabad's policy towards Geelani continued unchanged through the PPP-led government, Sharif's return as prime minister has set the separatist quarters in the Valley abuzz. Sharif became more inclined towards Geelani because he had always stood up to his bête noire Musharraf and welcomed his exit.
Feeling the pulse of time, Mirwaiz has finally started dancing at the crescent's tune, saying Pakistan has been always supportive of the Kashmiri people. Mirwaiz also, in a statement issued on Thursday has prayed for peace, progress, economic stability and political stability of Pakistan.
Also, despite the fact that the entire separatist camp remained mum over congratulating Pakistan on its Independent day this year, the sudden and buzzing statement of Mirwaiz raised several eye brows. It sets the agenda clear that Mirwaiz wants himself at the centre stage and for that he would perform any act, utter any word and please any one. Only time is going to decide would this 'out of blue' act appease the Pak authorities who otherwise have made up their minds to put the old boy, Geelani, in the limelight.
