Anti-Jammu agitation in Kashmir in the offing | 'Karnah to Qazigund' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 13: Moves are afoot in Kashmir to engineer a valley-wide strike against the people of Jammu region. What has rattled and angered certain leaders and many civil society members in the Valley is the August 4, 2015 letter from the Union Health Ministry to the Jammu & Kashmir Health Ministry asking the latter to identify "alternate pieces of land in both Jammu and Srinagar" for the establishment of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in Jammu & Kashmir. Though the letter nowhere says that the AIIMS will be established in Jammu, still Kashmiri leaders like Engineer Rashid (MLA from Langate) and many civil society groups in the Valley have come to believe that an AIIMS has been sanctioned for Jammu. Actually, it is misinformation campaign of the BJP launched through media, social media and big hoardings that has made the anti-Jammu forces in the valley to gang up against Jammu and start preparations for organizing anti-Jammu agitation in Kashmir from Karnah to Qazigund. The BJP has been claiming since July 30 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also sanctioned an AIIMS for Jammu. So much so, the BJP organized one "unimpressive" Dhanyawaad Rally" in parts of Jammu city to convey an impression that Jammu had also been granted AIIMS. It's no wonder that Engineer Rashid and Kashmiri civil society groups have joined hands against Jammu region and are planning an agitation against Jammu within the Kashmir Valley. The man who is on the forefront is Engineer Rashid. He organized a 50-hour-long sit in near the civil secretariat, Srinagar, which was concluded on Wednesday. Many civil society members joined the dharna and offered their support to Rashid, who has been appealing to one and all in Kashmir, including the separatists, to join the movement aimed at achieving for Kashmir II, IIM and IIMC. Before ending the dharna, Rashid warned the authorities of serious consequences if they failed to get for Kashmir IIT, IIM and IIMC. "His party would hold consultations with trade, transport, social and other religious organizations to come out with a joint strategy to seek IIT, IIM and IIMC for Kashmir. 50 hour sit-in was a wakeup call for every Kashmiri to rise to the occasion and start an organized struggle for the rights of Kashmiris. Central Government must establish IIT, IIM and IIMC in Kashmir or be prepared to face a mass public movement and agitation from Karnah to Qazigund," he said. He also rejected the view that the Kashmiri Muslims were fighting for a larger cause and there was no need for them to hanker after such institutes as IIT, IIM and IIMC and said it was their duty to also fight for such institutes. "There is no harm in seeking better facilities and institutions despite the fact that J&K is a disputed territory. Those arguing that seeking IIT, IIM and IIMC and other benefits for Kashmiris are irrelevant issues unless Kashmir issue is resolved, have a very weak argument to defend, as one needs to remember that Government of India is utilizing all our resources whatsoever and has full control over these resources," he said, and added that Jammu was getting everything at the cost of Kashmir. Reports from Kashmir suggest that the pleas of Engineer Rashid have been evoking a tremendous response from the civil society groups. If these reports and activities of Rashid are to be given any credence, then the possibility of an anti-Jammu agitation in Kashmir cannot be overruled. What an irony! People of Jammu region have yet to get an AIIMS, but in Kashmir the likes of Rashid have unleashed a campaign to arouse anti-Jammu passions there and coerce New Delhi so that they succeeded in their game plan. |
