Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 13: Despite government's tall claims to streamline the chaotic traffic system on crammed roads of summer capital, sixty percent traffic lights are defunct in the city causing 'irksome' traffic jams on routine basis.
The faulty traffic lights are major reason of routine traffic snarls which have irked both commuters and vehicle owners to a great extent. "One can see most of the traffic signals lie defunct in Srinagar city while as the authorities seem to be unconcerned about the issue. Developing technical snags has now become a common problem for much hyped traffic lights," Siraj Ahmad a Pantha Chowk resident told 'Early Times'. The officials in the traffic department especially policemen who were deployed at traffic junctions also believe that defunct traffic signals are the main cause of heavy traffic jams.
Meanwhile, the traffic policeman manning traffic beats wishing anonymity said, "We are fed up with waving our hands in all four directions to regulate traffic for the whole day as the signals fixed here are defunct."
He said that the traffic signals are highly troublesome for us. "Either they should be removed or made functional properly. The lights have achieved nothing other than traffic jams as well as unnecessary pollution." "The problem aggravates mainly during rains, right from Pantha Chowk to Sanat Nagar traffic signals remain non-functional. Moreover army personals who know as to how to operate the system put these lights on idle mode till convoy passes," Firdous Ahmad Dar of Sanat Nagar claimed. Traffic lights at different squares of the city runs idle due to lack of maintenance, although it is causing problem for the maintenance of traffic in the city yet they are not being repaired or reinstalled. At some traffic signals, the bulbs and other spare parts have developed snags. The policemen cite paucity of funds as the reason for lack of maintenance of the traffic signals.
When contacted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Traffic Srinagar, Maqsood Zaman in a complete denial mode said " This is absolutely wrong, not a single street light is defunct, yes we put the same on idle mode for few minutes whenever there is VIP movement on roads," When asked about installation of traffic lights on some of the major junctions including TRC Crossing and Dalgate SSP said "we have sent a proposal to Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and the same will be implemented in next phase"
