Driver allegedly beaten by SI, arrested for questioning abusive behaviour of police

Kishtwar, Aug 17: In a case of alleged highhandedness and abuse of power, Kishtwar police today booked a driver of a private vehicle identified by the family members as Shanawaz Khandey son of Ghulam Mohiudin Khandey resident of Sirgwari Kishtwar for questioning the alleged abusive language of in charge police post Kuleed Kishtwar who was allegedly harassing vehicle owners and challaning the vehicles.
As per the details available with "Early Times", more than 1500 vehicles were challaned by Kishtwar police, traffic police and Motor Vehicle Department alone in the month of July 2015, mostly in city areas leaving accident prone areas where reports of overloading has become the order of the day.
In this fresh case of alleged police highhandedness, driver of the vehicle bearing registration No. JK17-451 on its way from Sirgwari to Kishtwar was stopped by the police personals mostly SPOs outside police post Kuleed and challan the vehicle for overloading.
While challaning, the police personals allegedly use abusive and filthy language against the driver and on questioning the abusive behaviour of the cops, the in charge police post Sub Inspector Puran Chand also appeared at the spot and allegedly dragged him and take him inside the police post where he (driver) was allegedly beaten to pulp.
The SI, however, claimed that the driver assaulted him and tear his uniform. He was reported to have booked the driver under section 307 RPC .
Meanwhile the driver and Matador Association of Kishtwar held a strong protest at Bus Stand Kishtwar against the arrest of Shahnawaz Khanday and blocked the road demanding immediate release of arrested driver and action against in charge police post Kuleed. They threatened to go on indefinite strike in case police fail to release the arrested driver.
It is pertinent to mention here that most of the vehicles were challan at Hospital chowk where people mostly visited in emergency and many times it comes to notice that even the attendants of patients admitted in District Hospital Kishtwar while coming for purchasing of medicines was challaned by the police parties causes lot of inconvenience to the hospital visitors.
