2 months after assuming office, chairperson Nayeema Mahjoor off for holidaying in UK | Women's Commission goes defunct again | | Abdul Majid Early Times Report srinagar, Aug 17: At a time when crimes against women are on rise in J&K, chairperson of the State Commission for Women (SCW) Nayeema Mahjoor is making the victims wait for justice as she is holidaying in London with her children. Mahjoor, a former broadcaster and PDP leader, has skipped her crucial duties within two months of having assumed the SCW charge on June 24. Her absence, as per insiders, has left the Commission virtually defunct. For the past around a fortnight the visitors to the office often end up holding protests against the absence of the chairperson. "How can the head of such an important institution afford to skip duties for personal luxuries when everyday scores of complaints pour in," asked an SCW office-bearer. A victim said she along with her kids has been thrown out of her home by husband and the in-laws and has no place to go. "I had come to this office hoping to get justice, but the person who could come to my rescue is missing from the chair. This is disgusting," the woman said. Mahjoor, who spent over a decade abroad with the BBC, isn't unaware about the victimization of women in J&K. In an article in a Srinagar daily last month, she mentioned that the SCW is the place "where mostly women who are victims of violence, harassment and rape come to seek justice." But can victims of violence, rape and harassment wait for Mahjoor's return from vacations abroad? This, only she can reply. Upon her return from London, Mahjoor joined the PDP and also started business. After the PDP-BJP coalition came to power she was given the key post of SCW chairperson. But Mahjoor, as per the victims, is unable to perform her duties properly. As of now she is busy updating her Facebook page about her ongoing trip to London where her children are settled. "Hello from London...Though there are no guarantees for anything in life but no threat of flood or thunderstorm is predicted for few weeks of stay in London. Yet you never know what God has in store for us," she posted earlier this month hinting that she would be camping there for some time. Despite repeated attempts Mahjoor couldn't be contacted for her comments. Her office people however said "she was supposed to attend some conference abroad." When asked how she could stay back for weeks together in London when a "conference" is supposed to be a daylong event, the official said, "Chairperson is entitled to such privileges. Her children live there." |
