Early Times Report
Udhampur, Aug 17: The frequent removal of street vendors from the main town of Udhampur is leading to standoffs between vendors and the civic body and a large number of street vendors today held a protest outside the Office of Municipal Commissioner to register their protest against removal of their Kiosks and vending outlets.
Led by Surinder Singh Khalsa and Yash the vendors stated a strong protest in main town here today
Raising slogans against the civic body and municipal committee demanded justice as they have been deprived from their right to livelihood.
Roadside hawkers of staged a demonstration and protested against what they called the harassment under the guise of the drive against encroachments. The protest was a reaction to action taken by municipal officials i.e. removal of temporary stalls, which were put up by vendors of vegetables and fruits, footwear, dresses, leather products and other items in Udhampur town.
Later a deputation of protestors called on Municipal Commissioner K K Chalotra who held a detailed meeting with them. He apprised that encroachments are creating the problems for smooth traffic system and to pedestrians also. "The authorities are not removing the vendors but they will be relocated to the place near meat market," he said.
However some vendors raised a point by pin pointing that many buyers are vegetarian and they will not come to that place where chicken is being served, On this the Municipal Commissioner assured them that the meat vendors will not be allowed to slaughter in the market and will also be asked to maintain cleanliness which was agreed by the other side.
While speaking to media, Commissioner Municipality K K Chalotra said the identity cards will be issued to the licensed vendors which they have to wear all the time while doing business and action will be taken against erring vendors.
