Various Pak political actors derail peace process | | | If the External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, has gone to Islamabad she has gone to extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan. Though she had gone to Pakistan to participate in "Heart Of Asia" Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan the real purpose of Sushma Swaraj was to explore the possibility of reopening the stalled channels of dialogue between India and Pakistan for the purpose of settling various bilateral issues. Hence her mission was a noble one which had received appreciation from heads of various developed nations, including the US In fact the heads of these developed nations had welcomed the brief but purposeful meeting between Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif in Paris which was followed by an unexpected interaction between the two National Security Advisers of India and Pakistan, Ajit Doval, and Nasir Janjua, in Bangkok. In fact .India on Wednesday extended a hand of friendship to Pakistan, saying it was time the two countries display "maturity and self-confidence" to do business with each other as the world was rooting for a change and offered to move cooperation at a pace Pakistan is comfortable with. Speaking at 'Heart of Asia' Ministerial Conference on Afghanistan, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also asked the international community to ensure that the forces of terrorism and extremism do not find sanctuaries and safe havens in "any name, form or manifestation". She said the "heart of Asia" cannot function if arteries are clogged and noted that India's vision for the war-torn country was one of interlinked trade, transit, energy and communication routes, with Afghanistan as an important hub. However, there are actors, indeed, political actors, serving or retired Army officers and those manning the ISI who do not want India and Pakistan to promote cordial ties. That has been the reason for the establishment in Islamabad in delaying conceding just one main demand of India which would have encouraged New Delhi for keeping the doors of dialogue open. Had Islamabad initiated some steps for ending use of the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India, had it acted fast and punished Hafeez Saeed, who, according to India, has played a key role in 2008 Mumbai attack, had Islamabad agreed to refuse shelter to Dawood Ibrahim India would have taken a number of steps for reducing the ongoing mistrust and misgivings. Pakistan has not made a slight move on meeting some of the demands of India which included stopping ceasefire violations and material, moral and political aid to terrorists operating in Jammu and Kashmir or are on the launch pads across the LoC and on the IB for the purpose of being pushed into Jammu and Kashmir. Now that enough water had flowed down the river Jehlum and by now Pakistan should have realized its folly and responded to peace moves initiated by India. Well even when Sushma Swaraj has gone to Islamabad with a clear message from Modi that the BJP led NDA Government was keen to mend fences with Pakistan for ensuring friendly relations between the two countries which was key to peace in South Asian region. However, India's peace moves are thwarted by some political actors who have the habit of berating India for the fault of others. In this connection the latest statement from a senior political actor in Pakistan can have some ill effects on India's bid for peace. A former Pakistani minister has alleged that India was a main hurdle in normalisation of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations. Rehman Malik, who currently serves as chairman of the Senate standing committee on interior and narcotics control, on Tuesday said the Indian leadership and intelligence agencies did not want Pakistan and Afghanistan to resolve bilateral issues through talks, Malik's allegations came on the day when Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in Islamabad to attend the Heart of Asia conference. He alleged that Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing, was involved in terrorist activities in Balochistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Karachi. Can such a sermon help India and Pakistan to shed the veil of mistrust? Certainly not. It seems Rehman Malik does not want to allow Nawaz Sharif led Government to get the credit for normalizing relations with India. Let Nawaz Sharif isolate Malik and accept India's latest peace moves. |
