Srinagar, Dec 21: A number of cesspools that lie outside the Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), the lone tertiary-care hospital of the Valley, poses threat to the lives of patients, besides causing a lot of inconvenience to commuters. The inconvenience aggravates in winters, especially in Chilai kalan, as the water from these cesspools freezes, making the surface slippery. Gousia Akhtar, a local, said that the water in the cesspools freezes in the mornings and evenings due to which vehicles may skid off the road. "Accidents are inevitable in such conditions," she added. More than nine hundred patients and visitors visit the SKIMS hospital daily. Ambulances and emergency services face problems when an emergency occurs, said locals. "In accident cases, the vehicles can't move quicker as the road is in a very bad condition. Sometimes if a patient reaches a minute late to the hospital he may lose his life," Abdul Rasheed, a local, said. Locals, however, have approached the Roads and Building (R&B) department but they have paid no heed to their pleas, according to locals. Director SKIMS, Dr Showkat Zargar, said that he has already discussed the issue with the concerned R&B officials. "We have already taken up this issue with the R&B Department and they are soon going to work on this," he said. |
