NFSA implementation in J&K evokes criticism, parties criticise act | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 21: The implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) in the state recently by the PDP-BJP coalition government has evoked sharp criticism with almost all opposition parties opposing it tooth and nail. Various parties whose activists took to streets demanding the revocation of Act and people be given the ration as per old scale termed the NFSA as a cruel joke with the poor people of the State. NC has already opposed the Act and demanded that the same should not be implemented in the State while BSP, Panthers and parties like Peoples Republican Party (PRP),Jammu West Assembly Movement etc also have expressed their apprehensions that the Act would deprive the poor people from getting the ration needed for making their body and soul together. The main flaw in the Act which these parties are alleging is that one person will be given five kgs of rice to eat per month which is not sufficient as one person needs more than 10kgs of rice and five kgs of flour per month in Kashmir Valley while in Jammu vice versa. The people in Kashmir are two time rice eaters and hence they need over 10 kgs of rice per should per month while in Jammu region where people take chapatti the quantity of rice supplied per soul can be decreased to five kgs while the quantity of flour has to be increased to 10 kgs. With this basic flaw in the Act its implementation will create a problem to the people belonging to below poverty line dependent on supply of ration from CAPD, said Mohammed Javed an NC activist from Zalangam, Kokernag Kashmir. His views were substantiated by PRP leader G M Hamdarad. He said with the implementation of food security act in J&K the government in real sense has deprived the people of the State of food security. He said earlier a BPL family of three to four souls was getting 35 kgs of ration per month even if the family was with less number of souls than this it too would get same quantity of ration. But with the fixing of scale of five kgs of ration per soul a family with three souls will not get more than 15 kgs of ration which will not suffice them for even 15 days, he added. Hamdard demanded that the government should look into decision and make necessary corrections in the Act before its implementation in the State. Not only Hamdard but BSP State President Tulsi Dass Langeh has also strongly opposed the act and warned to launch agitation against it as it will put the poor people to starvation. According to sources the NC and other parties may press government to revoke the implementation of the Act during the coming budget session of the State Legislature. Sources said that NC will raise the issue on the flour of the House on very first day of the Session and it will try to put government on the mat over the issue. |
