BJP's opposition to Mehbooba likely to change political equations | PDP, Cong meet in LS | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 21: The alleged opposition of the BJP to Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed's suggestion regarding his replacement with his daughter and party president as Chief Minister and the report that the BJP would not mind Mehbooba Mufti taking over the State's highest executive position in case the PDP accepted its reported proposal of rotational Chief Minister may lead to change in the political equations sooner than later. There are reasons to believe that there could be a change in the political equation in the State and that the PDP could show the BJP the door. Three developments have taken place during the past few days. One was the statement of Mehbooba Mufti made on December 6 during the Hindustan Times Summit that the Bihar electorate exhibited its political maturity by voting the Mahagathbandhan comprising the JD-U of Nitish Kumar, the RJD of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Congress of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. "People have nothing to eat and you ask me what meat to eat! People have shown what they want. They don't want a meat debate. The Bihar polls have done a great job in politics for India." Mehbooba had said. She clearly hailed the Bihar electorate and victory of the "secular" front. The other was the statement of the JKPCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir that suggested that the Congress would be more than willing to support the PDP if it severed its ties with the BJP. "We had extended our support to the PDP immediately after the declaration of results. Our target is the BJP and RSS. We can go to any extent to keep the BJP out of power in the State," he had said. Actually, he referred to the grand alliance idea as was suggested by Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad. Besides, the Congress, a leading opinion-maker in Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Khayal also last week asked Chief Minister Mufti Sayeed to break ties with the BJP, hold fresh elections and "form Government with the Congress and not with the NC". His argument was that the PDP was becoming unpopular in Kashmir by sharing power with the BJP. All these statements were duly noticed. However, what the media ignored was the meeting between Mehbooba Mufti and AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. She walked all the way from the Treasury Benches to the Opposition Benches to interact with Rahul Gandhi in the presence of all present in the House, sat with him for at least ten minutes and interacted with him. What transpired between the two leaders is still not known. Neither Mehbooba Mufti revealed what transpired between them, nor did Rahul Gandhi say a word on the nature of talks which took place between the two on the floor of the Lok Sabha. That she took the initiative to meet Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha when hundreds of members were present in the House and that too at a time when the tempers were running very high could be construed as a strong message to the BJP. Her meeting with Rahul Gandhi was politically very significant by any yardstick. After all, Rahul Gandhi and the Congress members, backed to the hilt by other political parties, have made it impossible for the ruling BJP to run the House and do any business and the ruling BJP's all efforts to make the Congress help it run the House had failed to produce the desired results. |
