Chadoora MC dumping garbage inside Doodh-Ganga | Swach Bharat Mission? | | Early Times Report
Budgam, Dec 21: At a time when the whole country is organizing sanitation programmes under clean India programme "Swach Bharat Mission" , the authorities in J&K are leaving no stone unturned to bring disrepute to the state by getting involved into anti-people and anti environment activities. According to reliable sources the officials of local municipality in Chadoora town of central Kashmir which is represented by two senior cabinet Ministers are seen involved in dumping all the garbage into the Doodg-Ganga nallah which flows through this town. Irony is that same water is supplied by Public Health Engineering (PHE) department to thousands of people in Budgam as well as Srinagar districts. Due to increased population Solid Waste Management (SWM) has been seen as a great challenge in Jammu and Srinagar cities. Huge quantity of garbage gets piled up in these twin cities on daily basis. The way this garbage is stored and disposed off, poses a great threat to our environment. This activity is not only a threat to our environment but it is hazardous to the public health also. The garbage disposal or Solid Waste Management is not only a problem for Jammu or Srinagar cities but this is a very serious issue for the people residing in other towns of our state and Chadoora town is one such example. Details available with Early Times reveals that Municipal Committee Chadoora disposes off hundreds of kilograms garbage into Doodh Ganga Nallah every day. This illegal activity is going on since last several years. The sweepers working with Chadoora municipality collect all the garbage from various areas of Chadoora town and same is dumped during night time or in the early morning hours in the Doodg-Ganga nallah which is fresh water stream flowing through this area. Local residents say that main reason for this illegal activity is non availability of garbage dumping site or a scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM) plant in the area. Every day huge amount of garbage which includes biodegradable waste, polythene and even dead animal are dumped into Doodh Ganga. Around 4 kms ahead the PHE department lifts the same water and supplied to large population from Kralpora water supply scheme. PHE authorities argue that this water is filtered at Doodh Ganga water filtration plant Kralpora , but what kind of filtration will be possible when there are dead animals and other dangerous substances mixed with this water. Sources say that PHE officials only undertake simple bleaching of water at Kralpora and this diseased water is supplied to as many as 15,000 households. There have been incidents of gastrointestinal infections in the area and its main reason is unhygienic water being supplied from Kralpora water supply plant. Locals have urged upon authorities to come to their rescue. " We appeal Deputy Commissioner Budgam , Chief Engineer PHE , and SSP Budgam to personally visit Chadoora and see all this mess " said Fayaz Ahmad a local resident of Chadoora. |
