9 yrs on, Kokernag reels under darkness | Courtesy: Official apathy | | Saahil Suhail Anantnag, Jan 02: The Chack-Malikpora Gohan area of Kokernag is reeling under darkness for the last nine year. Courtesy: Official apathy. The locals told Early Times that since 2006, when some miscreants had stolen an electric conductor from the village, the department hasn't move an inch to provide electricity to the village. They said that instead of lighting the village, Power Development Department was delivering hefty power bills. "In 2006, miscreants stole the conductor and poles meant for providing electricity to the village but even after the passage of nine year, neither police nor the department has taken any step to mitigate our problem," said Zakir Ahmad Malik, a local. He said that they had registered written compliants with the department and Police Station, Kokernag, but all in vain. "In the 21ist century, we are reeling under darkness. I don't think any city resident will believe us. We have to travel to Kokernag for recharging batteries of our cellphones and electric gadgets," Asif Ahmad, a student said. The locals blamed the concerned junior engineer for the mess. "We approached PDD several times, but the concerned JE never visited the village despite his seniors' orders to him," they alleged. They alleged that ex-MLA Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, who was also a cabinet minister in the Omar government had ignored the village and resorted to political vendetta. When contacted. PDD AEE Mohammad Yousf Mir said he himself would visit the village on Monday and also seek details from the subordinate officials. "It is quite possible that the village might be reeling under darkness but on Monday I will visit the area," he said. Mir admitted that as many as 35 habitations in Kokernag were reeling under darkness. "We have as many as 35 habitations that haven't been yet electrified. We have submitted the report and all these habitations will be electrified under a centrally sponsored scheme," he added. Mir also admitted that miscreants might have stoled conductor in the village. "We have reported many such incidents to police," he added.
