Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Feb 18: The motor vehicle population is growing at a faster rate than the population growth. The surge in motorization coupled with expansion of the road network has brought with it the new challenges of addressing adverse factors such as the increase in road accidents in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources said that more than 2,000 people have died in the past two years and above 20, 000 were injured in road accidents in Jammu and Kashmir. In most of the cases the concerned authorities have left 'violators' free.
"In the last year more than 500 people lost their lives in 3,000 road accidents and about 1,000 people were injured in Kashmir valley only," sources told Early Times.
Sources said that it is all because of traffic regulating agencies who are issuing the licenses to the teenagers, due to corruption and mismanagement in the department, common masses face the brunt of accidents.
"In Kashmir valley especially, the situation currently stands as teenagers like of 15 year old are able to acquire a driving license.
It is a cause of concern for one and all, especially the concerned department whether they should be taken off our roads and licenses should only be provided to those of 18-years or older in order to reduce the amount of deaths that occur through dangerous driving in our state," sources informed.
Sources said that plying matadors on the road of Srinagar and other cities of Jammu is more of a race among drivers to pick up as many passengers as they can. They do not slow down their vehicles even if there is heavy rush of passengers in their vehicle.
"Many times it is seen that, there is an understanding between the cops and the matador drivers and they challan Matador or Sumo drivers just for formality to show the general public how vigilant they are about the erring driving, where as they are putting the passengers for risk," said sources.
A group of people said that the erring drivers go Scott free in the valley. The concerned department should cancel the driving licenses in order to curb the tendency of rash and erring driving otherwise it would be difficult for pedestrians to move freely.
They said that there should be a proper check on over loading, speeding of the drivers in all parts of Kashmir valley, so that the passengers and pedestrians could feel the safety.
