Distributors sell 'outdated' pesticides to orchardists in Anantnag | Department, enforcing agencies helpless | | Saahil Suhail Early Times Repot Anantnag, March 3: Dozens of distributors in this southern district are openly selling banned pesticides to orchardists in this southern district. Reports said that distributors and dealers in Anantnag, Bijbehara and particularly in Anantnag district are selling those pesticides to orchardists which have been banned and declared 'outdated'. They said that some employees working with Horticulture department are suggesting orchardists to use these banned and outdated pesticides for personnel gains and profit. "These employees are fooling orchardists just to get commission from dealers," an official from Horticulture department revealed. Fayaz Ahmad Qadri, who heads Agriculture department's enforcement wing admitted to have received such information from general public. He too confirmed that product in question has been declared outdated. "I assure you that stern action will be taken against those who are selling these pesticides," he added. Horticulture Department official pleading anonymity said that they haven't recommended pesticide in question in their spray schedule. "Neither we nor the agriculture university haven't recommended such pesticides," official said, adding they advise orchardists to not use such pesticides. Orchardists are worried over the fact that department and its law enforcing agencies have failed to control the sale of these pesticides. "If these products have been declared outdated, how come these companies manage to sale the same," a group of orchardists told Early Times They accused department of not taking action against the dealers and outlets who are deceiving orchardists. Pertinent to mention here, experts are of the opinion that apple crop is under threat because of the spurious pesticides in circulation. |
