Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 8: Astonishing it may sound, but it is a fact that one of the state senior leaders of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) is the poorer person in Jammu and Kashmir and probably in India also.
The reason being that the concerned BJP leader being a resident of urban Jammu is not able to earn Rs 1.25 per day, i.e, Rs 37.50 per month and hence falls in the poor category. The episode has also sent a shock wave among the people of the state as one of the family member of the said BJP leader is holding Minister of State (MoS) status in the popular PDP-BJP government.
The records that stand against his name in Consumer Affairs and Public Department (CAPD) say that the concerned BJP leader earns only Rs 27.40 (rounded upto zero value ) per day which means Rs 833 per month.
The income shown against the BJP leader who is a significant figure for having a very close relation with a PDP-BJP minister is even less than what a daily wager under Daily Wage Act gets.
As per the records in the possession of Early Times, the ration card of the leader has annual income of Rs 10000 only which means, he is earning Rs 833 per month that nearly amounts to Rs 28 per day.
Categories of Ration Card are PHH (AAY), PHH (BPL-others), Non PHH (APL) and Exclusion and the leader is covered under Non PHH (APL).
The BJP leader's case thus reminds of a historic decision taken by the then government in centre run by UPA that had claimed that a person living in urban settings and earning Rs 28.65 per day is not poor .
The planning commission' verdict in March 2012 had pronounced that an individual above a monthly consumption of Rs 859.6 in urban and Rs 672.8 in rural areas is not considered poor. Furthermore, the Plan panel had kept the poverty threshold even lower than it submitted to the Supreme Court in 2014 , which created an outcry among the civil society.
The methodology recommended by the Committee included spending on health and education, besides the calorie intake.
The BJP leader , who thus starves every day , falling short of Rs 1.25 per day, has a palatial building as his residence and is the most lucky leader (by default) to have a very close kin in the BJP-PDP ministry who enjoys the top ministerial berth also.
The revelations of the earning of the leader has sent a cheering wave among the most poorer of the beggar of Jammu who boast of earning Rs 10 per day through alms.
"My heartfelt grievance goes to the BJP leader who runs a show in BJP-PDP coalition and owns high value vehicle and a palatial bungalow in the city to be starving on Rs 27.40. I will appeal to all my beggar community to pools resources for him," said Daya Nand, a beggar from Bihar.
