Police names 20 outstation students in FIR; protests continue | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 8: The controversy at National Institute of Technology (NIT) here refuses to die down since the warring factions continue to be at loggerheads with each other. At the same time, the NIT authorities have decided to hold the examination at the campus from the 11th of this month. The agitation being carried out by non-local students continued today with the protesting students continuing to pitch for their demands. The agitation took yet another turn today with police naming 20 outstation students in the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by it with respect to the incidents that took place at the campus on Tuesday evening. The outstation students after coming to know that 20 of their colleagues have been named in the FIR lodged at police station Nigeen intensified their agitation. They wanted to move out of the campus and register their protest against the police action carried out against them on Tuesday evening. During the entire day the protesters sat on a dharna and carried out the agitation. The police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel stationed at the campus did not allow the students to come out of the campus. They also did not allow the agitating students to talk to the media persons who were at the entrance of the institute. The protesters raised slogans in support of their demands and 'vowed' to carry forward the agitation unless their demands are met. The media has been barred to enter the NIT campus following the recent events. The agitating students are demanding that the tri-colour which allegedly has been snatched by the police personnel should be returned to them. They also want stern action to be taken against police personnel who swooped on them while they were carrying out the protest inside the campus of the institute. The protesters are also demanding action against the students who resorted to anti-India sloganeering and burning of the tri-colour after India's loss to West Indies in the semi-final of T-20 world cup cricket at Mumbai on March 31. The campus has been rocked by protests and action by the police on non-local students over the past one week or so. In the meantime, Early Times has learnt that the NIT Srinagar authorities have rejected the demand of the protesting students that the campus of NIT Srinagar should be shifted out of the Kashmir valley. The authorities have also decided to hold the examination as per the schedule from April 11. It would be in place to mention here that the NIT authorities had said that the outstation students who wish to go to their homes would be allowed to do so and they can sit in the examination after their return. The authorities had in fact said that they would facilitate the journey of the outstation students to their homes if they wish to do so. In the meanwhile, the team of HRD Ministry including Sanjeev Sharma, Director (Technical Education) and Deputy Director Finance, Fazal Mehmood continue to be present at the campus. The team after reaching here on Wednesday carried out many rounds of talks with the management of institute and non-local students. The protesting students told the visiting team that they were 'brutally' attacked by the police personnel when they tried to take out a peaceful protest demonstration in support of their demands on Tuesday evening. The students said that cops went on rampage and beat them mercilessly despite the fact that the demonstration was peaceful one. The non-local students made it clear to the HRD team that they cannot pursue their courses further at the campus since the situation is volatile with everybody including the police after them. They demanded that instructions should be issued to the college management for proper security of the students failing which they would be forced to call it a day. Pertinently, the State Government on Thursday ordered for a magisterial probe in the whole matter. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Srinagar has been asked to probe the matter and submit the report to the Government within 15 days. Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar had on Wednesday said the tension in NIT Srinagar is an administrative issue and not a security issue. |
