| Jammu, Kashmir pulling in different directions | | Hate campaign in Valley | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 4: Relations between Jammu province and Kashmir Valley were never cordial. The reason was that while the Kashmiri leadership opposed the state's accession to India and extension of central laws and institutions to the state, the people of Jammu province hailed both the accession and the central laws.
In fact, the Kashmiri leadership considered the people of Jammu region a problem and a millstone around Kashmir's neck, notwithstanding the fact that Kashmir remained at the helm of affairs in the state after its accession. Their grouse against the people of Jammu region is that they don't support their anti-India movement and they always behave like "Indian agents". To be more precise, they call the people of Jammu region, especially the non-Muslims, "anti-Kashmir", "anti-Muslim" and "anti-resistance movement", which is not the case. The truth is that the people of Jammu province made supreme sacrifices and allowed Kashmir to prosper at their own cost. All their sacrifices have gone down the drain with Kashmiri leaders not only working against Delhi but also against the people of Jammu province and Ladakh.
The Kashmiri leaders have turned hostile to the extent that they have opposed even a petty demand of the state subject ex-soldiers seeking establishment of a Sainik colony in Kashmir. The last few days have witnessed Kashmir observing at least two shut downs, including the one on Friday, against the demand put forth by the ex-soldiers through a proper forum.
Sainik colony is not the only issue. Kashmiri separatists are opposing each and every issue that has the potential of bringing J&K loser to India than before and also rejecting each and every demand of the people of Jammu province seeking a proper place in the polity. In fact, they are accusing the authorities of giving a step-motherly treatment to Kashmir and pampering the people of Jammu province by pursuing and implementing the "RSS agenda" in the state. Each and every movement in Jammu, they describe as an attempt at changing the Muslim majority character of the state overlooking the fact that it is Jammu whose demography was being systematically changed.
The point is that the Kashmiri separatists and even the parties like the NC and the Congress have started hate-campaign in Kashmir against New Delhi, all non-state subjects and the nationalists in the state, including people of Jammu province, and their single point agenda is to further perpetuate Kashmiri domination and hegemony over the state's polity and economy but also to further widen the gulf between the state and New Delhi. All this has shocked the people of Jammu province and the result is widespread disaffection in the region. What has further angered the people of Jammu province is the BJP's soft approach towards Kashmir and Kashmiri separatists. The prevailing situation in the state doesn't augur well for the political future of the state. The state would wither away in case the Kashmiri leadership continued to prick and provoke the people of Jammu province. There is already a loud clamour in Jammu that the region must get separated from Kashmir as there is absolutely nothing that is common between the two regions. Indeed, Jammu province and Kashmir Valley are north and south poles and the Kashmiri leadership is doing all that it could to destroy Jammu. The only problem with the people of Jammu province is that they have no leader worth his name. It is the covil society in Jammu which has taken upon itself the responsibility of saving Jammu for India. |
