150 linemen die in harness; none compensated | Use and throw policy of PDD | | GS Asgotra Early Times Report jammu, June 4: The callous approach of the Power Development Department (PDD) has swallowed one more live of a need-based worker (lineman) when he was discharging duty at Rajpura Chowk on May 28. Sources told Early Times that Parshotam Lal, son of Kirshan Chand R/o Phallian Mandaal, received fatal head injuries when his stair skidded off while repairing electrical snag in Shakti Nagar area of Rajpura on May 28. "His colleagues with the help of locals rushed the injured Parshotam Lal to the Government Medical College and Hospital of Jammu but he succumbed to the injuries on the way to hospital", disclosed eyewitness. As per SRO number 328-PDD of 2011 dated 24-11-2011, the government has to provide ex-gratia relief to the tune of Rs. 3 lakhs to those killed in harness, while Rs. 1 lakh to those who sustain 100 percent disability during discharging duty. But so far not even a single deceased has been got benefit of this SRO. General Secretary of All Jammu and Kashmir Electrical Department Linemen and Worker Union, GL Bhagat said that Parshotam Lal was not a isolated case. "There are nearly 150 linemen, need base workers, daily rated workers who have died in harness in last 10 years. But ironically not even single got compensation so far under the SRO-328," said Bhagat. Bhagat said, "We have committed to provide an insulator kits to the linemen when they repair snags. But unfortunately whenever a mishap happens, they have been found without safety kits." |
