Strange! But true, PDP-BJP govt unsure about completion of widening of Sgr-Jmu NH | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 4: Believe it or not, but this is true, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta (BJP) government is un-sure as how much more time would be required for the completion of widening of the highway connecting Kashmir valley with Jammu division. This became clear during the speech of Roads and Buildings (R&B) minister, Abdul Rehman Veeri in the legislative assembly today. Veeri while winding up the discussion on the grants of the R&B and parliamentary affairs departments, said that it is not clear how much more time it will take for the widening of Srinagar-Jammu national highway to complete. "Let me tell it would take a lot of time in completion of widening of highway connecting Srinagar with Jammu. Work on the most treacherous stretch between Banihal and Ramban is going on these days and one cannot how much time more it will take. I am not sure about the time-frame but the work is going on," said the R&B minister. He said the issue has been taken with the central government and that the work is being reviewed on regular basis. Veeri said that an amount of Rs. 42,000 crores has been earmarked for the construction of at least 10 highways in the state under the Prime Minister's package. He said that an area of 2264 kilometers would be covered once these highways come up in the state. He dismissed the contention of some members that political victimization is going on in the name of development in the state. "It has to be understood by all the members that Jammu & Kashmir has limited resources. Tourism, horticulture and handicrafts are the three sectors that hold key to the generation of resources and this too is dependent on the political situation prevailing around. But at the same time we believe in equitable development and there would be no discrimination or disparity with any region of the state," said the R&B minister. Veeri said that he has asked the officials of R&B department to perform over the next few months failing which they would be transferred. He said the devastating deluge of 2014 led to the complete damage of 6000 kilometers of road length with 600 bridges also getting damaged. He exuded confidence that the damaged bridges would be restored by the end of this year across the state. "During the last year road length of 1810 kilometers was macadamized across the state. Out of this while 700 kilometers were macadamized in Jammu, the rest of 1100 kilometers got macadamized in Kashmir. There is a good news for all of us and that we are getting an assistance of 500 crores for development of roads and bridges from the World Bank," said the R&B minister. Veeri said that under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) more funds have been allocated to Jammu than Kashmir adding that same is done based on the requirements. He said that 107 schemes amounting to 1411 crores have been taken for upgradation across Jammu & Kashmir under PMGSY. "Under the PM's package 1500 crores have been earmarked for the construction of Ring Roads in Jammu and Srinagar. A road length of 175 kilometers has been macadamized at the various tourist destinations with an amount of 96 crores being spent on the same. Under the CRF 25 schemes have been approved at the total cost of 785 crores. The government is committed towards the development of Mughal Road," said the R&B minister. |
