anantnag, June 4: Two policemen, including an Assistant Sub Inspector, were killed by militants in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Saturday. Reports said that at around 11:30 am, two militants appeared on busy Khanabal-Pahalgam road near General Bus stand and shot dead two unarmed policemen, who according to official sources were manning the traffic. Cops, who were later identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Bashir Ahmad Ahanger S/o Ab Aziz Ahanger of Logripora Aishmuqam and Constable Riyaz Ahmad sheikh s/o Ali mohd sheikh R/O Uttersoo Kokernag, died on spot. "Both of them were brought dead," Medical superintendent of District Hospital Anantnag, Dr Majid Mehrab confirmed to Early Times. The firing incident created panic in the area and people were seen running for cover. Soon after the attack, forces cordoned off the area, however all in vain, as militants managed to flee from the spot. Both the militants, who carried out the attack, were caught on camera. The pictures showing both the militants carrying assault rifles running away from the spot has already gone viral over social networking sites. Meanwhile, a palm of gloom descended in the native village of ASI Bashir Ahmad after the news of his death broke out. According to district police, hundreds of people including MLA Pahalgam Altaf Ahmad Kaloo attended the funeral of martyr policemen at Aishmuqam. Villagers condemned the cowardly act of militants and termed it un-Islamic. "Killing Kashmiri policemen on traffic duty isn't a brave act and real fighters don't kill the sitting ducks," Shafkat Raina, a local resident wrote on Facebook. Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar along with IGP Kashmir Zone), SJM Gillani, IGP CRPF (Ops.), Nalin Prabth and Atul Karwal, DIG, SKR, Nitish Kumar, all district SSP's, SDPOs of South Kashmir visited Anantnag to pay tributes to slain cops this afternoon. He along with a large number of Jawans and officers from the JKP and other security agencies, besides civil administration attended the wreath ceremony held at District Police Lines. Rajendra expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, praying for the eternal peace of departed souls. DGP assured that every support would be provided to the families of martyrs providing them successor and assistance. Later, Rajendra chairing a meeting held at Range Police Office, asked the officers from police and Central Para-military Forces to gear up all resources to apprehend the culprits. He said that the desperate attempts by the terrorists would strengthen our commitment to eradicate menace of terrorism from the State. Forces will chase the culprits till they are brought to justice, he added. He stressed for joint efforts by the security and other agencies to curb the activities of militants in the area. |
