Govt to fire more absentee docs | Extra doctors deputed in hospitals to be shifted | | Ishtiyaq Ahmad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 13: The Government is again set to terminate around 37 doctors on its payroll who are on unauthorized absence and have not resumed their duties with J&K Health and Medical Education Department. Health and Medical Education Minister today informed the legislative council that the government has already terminated the services of 100 doctors and are compiling the list of more absent doctors for their termination. "The list of 137 unauthorized absent doctors was submitted last year and consequently notices were issued through leading daily newspapers to all these doctors asking them to report back to their respective duties, but they did not respond following which the termination orders off 100 doctors were issued," the minister said. He said that the government is now finalizing the documentation of around 37 absent doctors and very soon the termination orders in this regard will be issued. "Government can't wait for them any more as they have been unauthorizedly absent from their duties. The step is being taken as health department is facing dearth of doctors and wants to accommodate fresh medicos in the posts occupied by the doctors who ignored their duties," he said and added that the government have already referred the 79 posts of doctors to the Public service commission. He said that the culture of absenteeism would be no more tolerated in the health department. Later the minister informed early times that the Government would now review the attendance of doctors after every three months to take action against those who are found absent from duty without proper authorization or who don't join their duty after posting to the new place. "Hundreds of valley doctors who were on government payroll left Valley without any intimation and started practicing in and outside India. The state government repeatedly asked these doctors to return and resume their services however majority did not pay heed to multiple notices," he said. The minister also said that all the surplus government doctors deputed in hospitals with 'less footfall' are set to be shifted. "They will be moved to the hospitals to improve emergency services for patients and to remove 'undue' pressure on specialists deputed in these hospitals. The state has a large number of rural hospitals and dispensaries where there are more doctors than the actual requirement," the minister said. Most of these 'rural areas' are closer to major cities and townships. On the other hand, there is an acute shortage of doctors and specialists in urban hospitals and community centres. The 'striking imbalance' had forced us to go in for a rationalization policy, according to which every rural hospital or dispensary falling within a radius of 20-25 km will have strength of doctors as per the 'actual requirement' and not as per the whims and fancies of doctors," he said. Sources said that the list of doctors to be transferred has already been prepared by the department and it will be forwarded to the office of Health Minister for his final nod. According to official sources over 4000 gazetted and non-gazetted posts are lying vacant in health and medical education department in J&K, resulting in ill functioning of the department. Sources within the department added that although government is terminating doctors who are serving abroad from their services but it has failed to fill up thousands of gazetted and non-gazetted vacancies. Due to lack of personnel, hundreds of health care centres are not able to work efficiently. |
