Militant, woman killed in Udhampur firing, 2 hurt; alert sounded | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 13: A militant was among the two killed while two civilians got badly injured in exchange of firing between militant and security forces on Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. ''A local militant was killed this evening by the security personnel when he opened fire at the patrol party of CRPF and the nearby camp from inside the bus of State Road Transport Corporation in which he was travelling,'' a senior police officer here told . He said the militant, who might be from a local outfit, was travelling in the bus heading towards Jammu from Srinagar, adding, ''when a team of CRPF men stopped the bus for checking, just few meters short of Kud town, he (militant) took out his weapon and fired indiscriminately.'' The militant, who was seated in the last row, fired outside the bus at the CRPF camp while the security personnel cordoned the bus and retaliated thus triggering the gun battle. ''In just few minutes encounter, the militant was eliminated while a lady also died and two others including a man and woman sustained injuries in exchange of gun fight,'' said the officer. ''A militant has been eliminated by the security personnel,'' Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, Danesh Rana here told . He said that one woman also got killed while two civilians were injured and have been rushed to the Army Hospital, Udhampur. The slain militant, as per the voter card recovered from him, was identified as Tanveer Sultan, son of Sheikh Mohammad Sultan of Bemina, Srinagar while one Ak-47, 90 rounds, pistol, imported knife, a perfume bottle and a bag was recovered from the bus. The deceased woman was identified as Mamta Thappa of village Chattha, Jammu and the injured were Ruby Devi of Shakti Nagar, Jammu and Balbir Singh of Gurdaspur, Punjab. ''The operation is over but we have launched the searches to rule out presence of more militants,'' said the top cop. An alert has been sounded in Katra town of Reasi district and along the highway post terror attack. The traffic suspended on the highway was resumed late tonight at around 2115 hrs after the clearance from the police and traffic authorities. Last year on August 5, militants attacked the BSF convoy in Nasru area of Chenani in Udhampur district when the Amarnath Yatra was in progress. Two BSF jawans were killed and a militant was eliminated while one identified as LeT's Mohammad Naved was arrested alive. This year's Amarnath Yatra is starting from July 2.
