Of Mehbooba's symbolism at Kheer Bhawani and reiteration in Assembly

Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 13: If symbolism does have any significant effect on the masses, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has managed to instill faith and trust amongst the migrant Kashmiri Pandit community that her Government and she herself in particular were serious towards their honourable repatriation and rehabilitation to the valley.
Mehbooba Mufti defied the popular sentiment in Kashmir and risked inviting the wrath of opposition and separatist bandwagon that has joined hands to ensure that KPs did not return to the valley when she welcomed the community at the annual Kheer Bhawani Mela in Kashmir. Chief Minister did not only reach Kheer Bhawani temple and welcome thousands of KPs who converged there from across the country to pay their obeisance to their deity, but participated whole heartedly in their religious rituals the photographs of which went viral on social media. "Though no faction of KP migrant community has commented on CM's gesture, but many privately admit that her gesture was unprecedented and she succeeded in giving a sense of security and belongingness to the community" said a retired government servant of KP community. "She participated actively in all our religious rituals, symbolizing the traditional pluralistic ethos of Kashmir, which underline the spirit of Kashmiriyat" he added.
Mehbooba however, is not the first Chief Minister who travelled to Kheer Bhawani to meet the KP community and reiterate that they would work for the honourable return of the community. Omar and his father Farooq Abdullah had also done the same several times, but their visits proved to be mere symbolism. "Farooq Abdullah had tried to reach out the minority community singing bahajans during his visit to an Ashram in Jammu, but his symbolism never transformed into action and he or his party that ruled this state for decades after the 'ethnic cleaning' of Kashmir, did little to stop encroachment of properties of Kashmiri pandits" said another senior citizen of KP community.
Meanwhile, Mehbooba has resisted pressure from Separatists and from certain quarters inside the Legislative Assembly which is in session and reiterated that she was committed for the return of the KPs and her Government was ready to do whatever it takes to meet the objective. Her symbolism at Kheer Bhawani and her reiteration in the Assembly indicate the resolve of PDP-BJP coalition to ensure return of KP community to their homes in Valley, sooner than later.
