Burglars on theft spree, police clueless | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 21: A sudden surge in burglaries in the city and on its outskirts has gripped people in a state of panic as series of thefts for the past two weeks have raised a big question mark on police vigil in the state's winter capital. Though police claimed to have constituted new teams, activated news nakas and lifted suspects to douse the simmering anger brewing among the people and the victims of thefts, but all this is in vain. Though police had registered cases, they were yet to make any breakthrough. The burglars had decamped with cash and valuables amounting to crores, according to police sources. As per details, burglars last night barged into house of a Medical Assistant at Slathia Mohalla falling under the jurisdiction of Nagrota police station and escaped with Rs 7 lakh cash. Sources said that the victim last night slept in the courtyard when some unidentified burglars barged into his house and escaped with Rs 7 lakh cash. Sources said that the victim stated that recently he has sold a piece of land and the cash was kept in the house as the victim wanted to renovate his house in few days. In the morning family members came to know about the burglary and they reported the matter to police following which a case under sections 457 and 380 of RPC was registered at Nagrota police station. May 31: Cash and ornaments worth Rs 25 lakh stolen from house of Architect at Sarwal. May 2: Burglars barged into house of an advocate and escape with Rs 10 lakh at Nowabad. May 2: Burglars escaped with Rs 25000 cash, 16 tolas gold and one kg silver from Prem Nagar. April 23: 3 gold chains weighing 5 tola stolen from a jewellery shop at Satwari. April 17: 14 tolas gold, Rs 50000 cash stolen from Panjgrian, Nagrota. March 31: 35 tola gold and silver ornaments stolen from a house at Resham Ghar. Feb 28: one .12 bore gun stolen from a gun shop at Chatha. These thefts have put a big question mark on the police vigil in the winter capital of the state. Theft of poles: PDD workers booked, contractors go scot free Sunderbani , June 20: While two PDD workers were booked for allegedly stealing poles from Sunderbani, no action has so far been taken against the contractors who had received the consignment. PDD workers - Kewal Krishan of Barnara and Mohammad Parvez of Magran - were held guilty of stealing a number of poles from the electricity department and a case in this regard was registered at Sunderbani police station on May 15, 2013. The poles were alleged to have been sold by them to some influential contractors who had taken them in tractor-trolleys, police sources said. While the two PDD workers were held and punished under law, police had not bothered to book the contractors who had purchased the poles from them, sources alleged, saying the contractors were the real culprits in the theft. It was surprising to note that even after three years of the incident, police were 'clueless' to the whereabouts of the contractors who had received the stolen poles.
