SRINAGAR, June 21: As if the KPs and Sainik colony issues were not enough to tax the government that a PDP legislator from Rajouri on Tuesday pressed for separate colonies on the pattern of KPs for tribal population.
PDP MLA, Chowdhri Qamar Hussain while talking to reporters during Jammu and Kashmir Tribal Welfare Forum (JKWF) protest against the government's alleged 'unresponsiveness' said " tribal population living in and around forest areas must be rehabilitated in separate colonies on the pattern of Kashmiri migrant Pandits"
"We will be forced to start a sustained campaign followed by roadside protests against the government in case our demand was not considered. If the government intends to vacate them from their houses to protect forests we must be rehabilitated in colonies on the pattern of KPs," said Chowdhri.
It is worth mentioning that the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti on the floor of the House claimed that government has no plans of establishing separate colonies for KPs and retired soldiers nor any land was acquired or identified to execute any such plan.
The protesters including hundreds of Panchs, Sarpanchs and other Gujjar leaders who participated in the protest led by MLA Rajouri demanded the government to pass bill in the ongoing Assembly to restore reservation in promotion for tribal population of the state.
He also appealed the government to provide adequate staff to the schools falling in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) inhibited far flung areas of the valley so that the children of tribal community will be able to avail benefits of quality education.
"Our another demand is enhancement in the rate of scholarship to Gujjar and Bakerwal students and same should be done at par with Pahari students so that the discrimination come to end," said Chowdhri
The protesters appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the issues of tribal community and make all-out efforts to restore the reservation in promotion by adopting the legal procedure during ongoing Assembly session.
